: Lower Control Arm Bushings Tack Welded?

When I was removing my lower control arm bushings, I noticed two of them had been tack welded to the a-arm.

I have heard of tack welding poor fitting ball joints but not bushings.

Should this be something to worry about? I haven't installed the new parts yet.

Thanks

Chris,

My understanding is that this was a common practice on A-bodies from the factory. I just replaced the original bushings on my '72 Chevelle and mine were also welded in.

Take care,
Mike

Yes they are spot welded and would recommend that the new ones also get spot welded in. There is a lot stress placed on suspension control arms and the design of the lowers dictates that the lower get spot weld to prevent movement of bushing in the control arm, I've seen bushing replaced and not tack/spot welded in place and later the vehicle has a popping noise during braking, it was the bushing popping/moving in the control arm. I always reweld them.

Thanks guys, you have put me in my comfort zone. Should both the front and rear bushings on the a-arms be tacked?

Thanks.
