Hello all I live in Connecticut, and the oil companys have added 10% ethanol. Meaning 1 gal per every 10 gal fuel. Is this ok for my big block chevelle? Any comments would be great!

G,
What is the octane rating on that fuel.Reason I'm asking is that, ethanol is a natural octane booster.

It's just fine. I run a lot of that through my 468. It is a little less dense than straight gas, so if you are lean now, you will be a little leaner. Fatten it up if you have to, and enjoy a couple or three extra octane numbers. Our gasahol was 93 octane until they started screwing with it.

Ethanol eats plastic! All you have to do is ask your local motorcycle mechanics that have dealt with plasic tanks.

Good point LKN BCK. You might want to run the tank down to almost empty and fillup with gas that doesn,t contain ethanol before putting it to sleep for the winter.

IM in CT too, but i was unaware of this. Is it just a specific company you are talking about, or all companies? Theres a sunoco around the block from my house that has 94 at the pump, but i hear they are getting rid if it. Have you heard anything about this?

I'd think it would be OK, since most new cars have plastic gas tanks. It also depends on the type of plastic used...

Ethanol is not compatible with standard rubber hoses, will make a gooey paste out of bare aluminum, and will corrode steel lines. However, at 10% it's effects will be pretty minimal. Over time you may have some fuel delivery problems due to the breakdown of your rubber fuel-line sections. To run a true ethanol vehicle you need to replace all rubber seals with EPDM seals and all fuel lines need to be either anodized aluminum or stainless steel. As for plastic, most fuel tanks are made from HDPE and this is a compatible plastic for ethanol.
