I went to change my radiator overflow and wiper fluid bottles on my 67 Chevelle. While they were removed I noticed several wiring clips (not sure what you call them) including the one with 3-4 connections that go to the voltage regulator just laying there unconnected. Now my question is, how could the large one not be connected to the voltage regulator and everything seem to be okay. Doesn't this harness need to be connected to get lights, battery charge, and whatever else? Its winter and the car is not being driven, so could I have maybe accidently disconnected it not knowing and I would have started having problems in the spring when the car is being used again. Thanks

Possible, but is it also possible that you have an internally regulated Alt.?

Or a internally regulated 1 wire alternator. What type of charging system do you have? If you don't know how to tell, post back.

Its a 1 wire alternator. I just replaced the one that was on the motor with a new chrome one. Both hooked up with one wire on a screw terminal. I replugged that wire back in to the regulator. Should I not do that then. Are you saying with a one wire alternator I don't need a voltage regulator and I should unplug it back.

Okay thanks. So I can take the old voltage regulator off. I'm trying to clean up the engine compartment and get rid of some of those wires that are just laying there not connected to anything. Ols sensor wires etc.

You should be able to delete a lot of wires with that setup being removed. You now have some extra wires coming out of your bulk head to use for other purposes. If you have the large brown wire going out to the voltage regulator from inside the car, you may be able to use that port to run for anythign you want such as an HEI or other distributor.

Okay thanks. I'm going to take a look at it later and see what wires are going where and attempt to see what they are or identify them. Then maybe I can post what I see and you can advise if I need them or what they may be for. There are a few going different places that don't connect to nothing and I want to clean that up. Any help would be appreciated. Wiring is not one of my specialties. Know a little to get buy, but not that much. Thanks for the help thus far though.

Just to clarify, to use that port, you would have to disconnect the factory wiring and use you own, you wouldn't be able to use the large brown to power anything. The large brown wire going out to the voltage regulator from inside the car comes from the ground side of the GEN lamp.
