i took my pitman arm off when i had my gearbox rebuilt. does it need to be pressed on, what is the best way to put it back on the shaft. this is my first experience with redoing a suspension.

It just slides on and then tighten the nut. It is tapered so it needs to go on with the large side of the bore first.

Make sure the "flats" are lined up on the splined portion of the gear and pitman arm. My pitman arm had a small notch that you line up with the flat on the steering gear spline. Pitman arm should go straight back towards rear of car. Plenty of muscle needed to tighten nut, about 150 ft lbs or so depending on year.

turn the steering gear all the way right, then counting turns all the way left, then back to the 1/2 way spot so the gear is in the middle of its travel. Then the arm sits square with the car, big end of taper goes on first and the blanked out spline alined with the one on the shaft
