Is the casting on a early BB the same as a newer one in terms of drilled and tapped mounting locations for alternator brackets and such? In other words, I have a 70-72 block in my 67 and was going to replace the water pump with a new high-flow deal to help with cooling, since the motor was out anyway. My thinking was to put in a short water pump on the newer block, run the alternator on the correct side (for a 67) of the motor.
Plus I'd have a little extra room for some electrics up front if needed.
Thanks,

Over the years, Chevy, ESPECIALLY GM corporate, has done some REALLY dumba$$ things. But I can't think of anything they have done that is as dumb as the change made in 69 which put the air cond comp on the left and the alt on the right!!!! To this day, it would be worth it to me to have assult and battery charges filed against me if I could literally hammer the crap out of the engineer for that stupid mess!
Along with the swapping of air cond comp/alt in 69, all V8 engines went to the long water pump. So, 68-earlier, short pump (alt left side), and 69-later, long pump (alt right side).

I have always suspected the reason for the long pump was when AC became more popular they now had 3 belts and the load on the bearings of the WP was too far forward of the centerline of the bearings so it would kill the front bearing. Kind of like having radical offset wheels increases the load on the wheel bearing.
