At what power level does the average chevelle stock driveshaft fail? Didn't the LS-6 use the same driveshaft as any other chevelle?

The stock 30yr old driveshaft??? :D I'm kinda wondering that myself.I put in new u-joints when I had my 3.73's put in, but I think the old driveshaft may not handle 450-500hp...

A new 3" tube with 1350 joints and new yokes is only about 300.00. How much is your ride worth, ever see a car pogo after losing the front joint. Think about it. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Yeah I know $300 bucks ain't bad but I was curious, I've never broken one but I've twisted off pinion yokes etc. And I know alot of cars out there don't have a custom driveshaft. I suppose it's all related to torque and traction. I'll be putting a custom unit in my bb chevelle but I was planning on running the stock driveshaft in my son's 327 Nova, both cars with front and rear loops to be safe.

My friend kept his old driveshaft, it was stock on his '66 (454, aprox. 600 hp/tq), put new u-joints on it, took it to the chassis dyno... snap!

Everything will fail sooner or later, I used a stock driveshaft out of a 68 Riviera in my 64 Malibu, The Car was a 99 % track only car at that time running 6.80's 1/8 w/ 1.46 60', Car had gone 10.95 @ 122 1/4 weighed 3200 lbs. It was in there in stock form for 11 yrs. It was the type that necked down at both ends. I backhalfed the car, shortend the driveshaft and it broke where it necked down at the rear. Had a New 4" shaft made complete for 195 $ and it works great. Only problem with running the large 1350 U Joint is you have to change trans and pinion yokes.

Think we still have a discount from www.dennysdriveshaft.com. (http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com.) I use their HD 1310 unit, which isnt a bruiser, and I think was around $250.

wow, that sounds like it was a mess, I guess I'll spring for a new shaft for both, maybe sell off the originals on ebay to offset the costs.

That's some crazy stuff troy. You're lucky you didn't get hurt. I'd say it's definetly worth the extra $$$ to keep that from happening.
