I 've read somewhere that a... BB ps pump's hose connection(s) .. is positioned slightly different than a sb pump. It stated that ... switching from a SB engine to a BB, would require using a BB pump, ...to get everything hooked up properly. Is this the case? Changing from 307 to a 540. Thanks

As far as I know, BB and SB PS pumps are the same on a 70.

There are two ways to tell:

A) get the assembly manual for your year and check out the power steering option part numbers to see if there are different numbers for SB versus BB.

B) just try and bolt the sucker on there and see if it works.

The pumps would be the same, it is only the reservoir/tank that might be different. And then it is just the lower pressure return line so you can run it just about any way you want. So it is very very likely that you can use your SB pump on the new BB, so long as you get a compatible bracket.

I just went through putting a new power steering pump on my car. The first pump I got had the return line coming out to the left of the pump (drivers side) I took it back to where I got it and said the return line should be point down and to the right. The guy told me that the first pump was for a small block car. Ground up in there catalog shows this first pump as a replacement pump. I didn't like the first pump since the hoses would not look correct on the car. I have also seen two different pumps on the 70. I believe the one pump is call a bango style pump, which I have been told has a smaller reservoir and the second is shape like a tear drop that has a larger capacity reservoir. The brackets are different for a BB then a SB that attach the pumps, but the holes on the pumps are the same. Here's what the Bango style pump looks like in the links below.

Here's another one from Re Animated car that help me out.

I now have a RED 70 SS 454 Sta. Wgn. (70 front clip) The wagon was a 71- 307-Auto. with power Steering.
I just used B.B. brackets on the 71- 307 pump. The 71 307 P.S. pump has been on the wagon for 5 years. I did install new hoses.
I believe the pumps are the same, Just different mounting brackets.
Bottom line my 71-307 power steering pump WORKS on my 70 454 wagon.
My 70 SS 454 Sta. Wgn. is a fraud, And I have papers to prove it !!!
