: AFR BBC heads talk....Wolfplace?
Ron454 Jun 14th, 04, 3:41 AM Hi again folks.
A couple of questions.
If I wanted to either email or write to
AFR, who is the main man there? AKA the president?
I wish to tell them how much I appreciate the friendly service and help I recieved from the salesman who helped me with my head purchase. They even went so far as to swap me the flat tappet springs for roller springs after I changed my mind about the camshaft I decided to run. Free of charge.
Next. I bought the 305CC heads with the CNC chambers. I took one of the heads to my engine builder to check out and he was quite impressed. It's rare to get him to compliment on new things.
He did notice one thing that he found odd. AFR leaves the seats a ways below the CNC machining in the chambers. He felt thet it is best to have the chamber blend perfectly with the top of the seat.
While this is something that I would feel comfortable tuning up with the die grinder, I really don't like the idea of taking the grinder to a $2400 pair of hears. So Wolf.....should I or should I leave them be? It would be rather touchy work, and maybe AFR has good reasons for doing them the way they do.
Curious,
Ron
Wolfplace Jun 14th, 04, 11:22 AM Ron,
Call & ask for Tony Mamo. He designed the heads & is really easy to talk with,,,very sharp & good people graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Do not even think of grinding on them until you discuss it with him.
The seats & lead in are I believe the last thing done after the CNC work.
Ron454 Jun 15th, 04, 6:25 AM Thanks Mike,
I will give Tony a call tomorrow. Looking forward to talking with him.
My salesperson was Dave Kubert and he was simply excellent to deal with. I am one who believes in positive feedback when I get good service!

Richss396 Jun 15th, 04, 10:32 AM Ron,
Tony at AFR is a great guy to deal with and spent hours of his time (numerous phone calls) determining which heads and options would work best with my setup. I'm sure it helped tons after mentioning I was working with Mike Lewis too...
Mike's interested in his customers and even wants me to give him a shout after I throw the 325's on as he said its going to be one wild motor/ride with the larger lift/duration cam, 13:1 CR, and should come to life/pull like hell over 7000 rpm....
Richss396 Jun 15th, 04, 11:30 AM Correction.............
I meant to say Tony at AFR (not Mike) was all pumped up about hearing back from me once the heads were on and I'd completed a few rpm bursts...

Well,,,,
Took the blower off & started checking to see why it wouldn't idle. below 3000 RPM
Set the blower on the intake without a gasket and you could drive a truck under the center
The piece of crap Weiand intake which I had to cut .065 on each side to bolt the engine was .022 higher on the outside edges then the center which does not make for a real good gasket seal under the blower graemlins/angry.gif
So,,,, off with the intake, on to the mill,,,,
Man I love quality parts :D
Oh well,, job security I guess,, glad the customer bought the blower kit :D
At least it wasn't the Demon's which I supplied
RegaMaro Jun 15th, 04, 2:01 PM I got my AFR heads through Mike(Wolfplace) and altho I don't have them yet they look like they're going to be arriving much sooner than anticipated. Mike has been AWESOME to deal with. Like it has been said in here and another recent thread, he has gone out of his way to sort out my needs and even just chit chat about ideas. Great guy who knows his stuff! Thanks again Mike!
BTW Mike, I'm still waiting on those pictures of the blown 392 Chrysler with a 671 smile.gif
Richss396 Jun 15th, 04, 2:43 PM You can find the blown 392 with dual demons on the bottom of the home page on his website.....

Ron454 Jun 15th, 04, 6:09 PM Well, I caled Tony at AFR and had a short chat. Mike, I called him before I read your response...so I didn't get to say "Mike says Bite Me". :)
Anyway, he was quite greatful and happy to get a call commending one of his techs and the service they provide.
About the other question I asked him...
Mike said:
"Do not even think of grinding on them until you discuss it with him.
The seats & lead in are I believe the last thing done after the CNC work."
He agreed with my engine builders comments regarding the step left around the seat in the chamber and said it would be fine if we carefuly blended this into the top of the seat.
In fact, he said he is going to modify the CNC program to do a better job in this area. Also said it would pick up a bit of low lift flow....which makes sense.
He also said that I'm going to LOVE the 305 CNC chamber head on my 496 and wants me to call him and let him know how it runs.
Pretty cool folks.
Ron
