I will make this as short as possible
I have a 70 Nova with a 454 and a scattershield and hi torque starter.
I am going back to a stock GM 621 bellhousing (which I have) and want to continue using my hi torque starter. I wont bore you as to why I am changing back.
My concern is, I saw a 621 advertised on EBay (I am not buying this one) and it had a SQAURE cut out of the bellhousing and the seller said in his description, that he had cut it get his hi torque starter to fit.
Is anyone using a stock GM 621 bellhousing on their Big Block and a Hi torque starter and if so, did you have to alter the or cut the bellhousing ? I hate to have to go a stock starter if I dont have to.
Thanks for your time.

Here is the link on EBay to the one that was cut

Once again thanks

I have had two High Torque starters with 621 bellhousing and did not modify the bellhousing at all.

I checked and see that you can get a High Torque starter in either a stock design or High Torque mini starter that has a different shape than the stock one.
Are you using the mini design or stock GM design ?
Thanks again for you time.

It was cut to clear the wrong GM starter. I have seen this done a lot by people who do not have a clue that there is a specific starter for manual trans applications!

My 69 396 cam from factory with 621 bell & gm hi trq starter with cast iron nose, fits fine,no mods required.

Go for it but ensure the starter is correct for a stock man trans 396 70 nova with 168 flywheel and you should be ok. I believe a 70 nova also used the hi trq starter with cast iron nose for man trans but i am ot 100% sure on that one.
