: 350sb to 402bb
Chirp08 Oct 4th, 04, 8:24 PM Right now my car has the 350sb in it, and i have a chance to purchase a fully assembled 402 with all the pulleys, water pump, started, alternator, etc. included. IN addition a radiator to work with it.
I was told that im going to need to get a transmission cooler and deep pan? Can anyone provide some links or give me some part numbers to help me price these out?
I know im going to need big block springs, will i need anything in addition to them to prepare the front suspension?
Will the 350 motor mounts be reusable on the 402?
My car was originally a 402 car so i believe everything on hte front suspension but hte front springs is correct for the engine.
"The engine comes with pulleys, brackets,
starter, alternator, fuel pump, fan, and even a good radiator that kept this
big block nice and cool. "
Anything missing? I have a carb i can use, and ill get a basic set of headers (im not worried about the numbers since it should outperform my 350 no matter what).
I need to price everything out before i jump to make sure i can afford this. And the engine is going to cost me just as much as it would to do the work on my 350 to try to get close to 400hp, which makes it pretty obvious that there is a potential for a better investment here.
Sorry for so many topics, but its just a big decidsion to make and times running out..
GRN69CHV Oct 4th, 04, 9:36 PM You are lucky, frame mounts are the same. I would consider new motor mounts, these are inexpensive and much too hard to change at a later date. If the motor is correct with all brackets it will be an easy swap. Just fyi, depending on the year 402, if it is a stock '71 or '72, they are actually way down on power, more torque than the 350, but also weigh a lot more.
Chirp08 Oct 5th, 04, 3:41 PM what about my TH350 anything that will be required?
This 402 was rebuilt and running numbers that are above stock, i just need to figure out if i can afford to install it tongue.gif
GRN69CHV Oct 5th, 04, 3:52 PM TH350 will work fine if it is in good shape. Just install a shift kit.
Chirp08 Oct 5th, 04, 4:00 PM Ok, so besides getting whats has been mentioned already you are pretty positive there is nothing else i need to change or buy?
SILVERSS454 Oct 5th, 04, 4:04 PM Check the duration numbers on the cam in that 402 and replace torque converter with the appropriate size. You won't need a deep oil or transmission pan. An oil cooler is a nice luxury but, if the cam isn't much above stock then, you won't need to change converters so...no need for a transmission cooler.
Make sure to put NEW motor mounts on the block before install. Hedman makes a nice set of headers for these cars cheap!
Chirp08 Oct 5th, 04, 7:55 PM are they ceramic though? i can get a "nice set" of hooker headers for 150 bucks, there isn't much incentive to go more expensive for nothing.
I will most likely be installing a 3000rpm convertor, does this mean i need a tranny cooler?
Bob West Oct 5th, 04, 10:32 PM Heat kills automatic transmissions, deep pan, external cooler and shift kit are mandatory in my book graemlins/thumbsup.gif
70_FathomBlueMalibu Oct 6th, 04, 1:59 AM I think you might need a BB fan shroud. Sounds like you have most of the rest.
FYI, Summit has a nice set of "house brand" 1 3/4" headers that are made my Dynomax. They drop right in and only cost $79.95 or so. You can save big bucks there. Many people on here are running them and are a steal. Can't remember the part #, but they are advertised for a 70-81 Camaro...yet they fit our 68-72's perfectly.
I bought a set, but haven't put together my future big block yet.
Chirp08 Oct 6th, 04, 2:55 PM awesome ill look into them, thanks for the tip.
How much for the deep pan and external cooler? Does jegs or summit offer these parts?
Yes, they do. Just check their online parts list, or give them a ring if you can't find it online. That's standard hot rod stuff, so they're bound to have it.
Chirp08 Oct 6th, 04, 7:43 PM found some nicely priced b&m components:
3000rpm hole shot convertor: $360.00
trans pack: $52.00
deep tranny pan: $50.00
tranny cooler: $50.00
cant go wrong with those prices :|
This is actually pricing out very nice :D
GRN69CHV Oct 7th, 04, 6:27 AM What gears do you have. I run 3000 stall with 3.73's & 28" tall tires, any less than about 3.55 gear might have too much slippage for your liking. You could move down to a 2400 converter also for better street manners.
70_FathomBlueMalibu Oct 7th, 04, 6:41 AM Honestly, I would shop around for converters. I had a custom-built stall fashioned for my 700R-4 that came in at $300. I was told it would flash at about 3200-3500 rpms based on the specs that I gave them. They hit the nail pretty much on the head, as it flashes to about 3500. HUGE difference over my old TCI off-the-shelf converter.
The brand I use is a PTC, btw. There is definitely good stuff out there. You just need to know where to look.
Chirp08 Oct 7th, 04, 3:05 PM i have a 3.73 rear with 255x60x15's on the back.
Right now it has a b&m convertor, and its much easier to have grab an off the shelf convertor, i doubt its as bad as you make it sound.
