: Household items you used to work on your Chevelle

You have to give credit to Hagerty and their commercials during BJ auction. When I watched the guy behind the GTO cleaning it with his wife toothbrush it reminded me of a few household items I have used to work on the Chevelle. I used to love my daughter's cotton diaper rags. They were very absorbent and excellent to dry the cars. Wife was always asking for them, “Luis, did you take them?” Nope. One day I needed another pair of pliers and used the nut cracker and ruined it. Wife was looking for it during Christmas but could not find it, I wonder why. Many times I used the toothbrushes, too, but never used the dental floss. One day while working in the engine compartment I needed something to hold the wire harness and took the mop apart to used the handle to hold the wire harness across the fenders. Not long ago my wife had a brush to clean dirty carpet spots and I used it to clean the tires and ruined it with grease.

Kiwi instant shoe polish. Used it 7 years ago to put the black back in my seat belts, and they've held ever since!

Pledge furniture polish on my vinyl top, works like a champ and doesn't leave streaks on the black paint after a rain like the armor-all type products do.

The old wire coat hanger can be bent up to make the best hooks for hanging parts while they are being painted. Good for gas welding too.

The round end of a can opener (church key type) and a block of wood to remove drip rails. :secret:

I haven't personally tried this, but i hear the dishwasher or the bathtub both make excellent parts washers:yes:..

I like to clean all the chrome under the hood with windex..and my wife is a dental hygienist, so I have PLENTY of new toothbrushes and even a few dental tools..

Does washing your parts in the dishwasher count? My ex wife used to absolutely hate it when I did that.

The oven, I repainted my emblems then laid them flat and baked them to get the paint

Q-Tips ! Good for small paint touchups and detail cleaning in those tight spots, SOS or Brillo pads for white letter tires, rubbing alcohol for cleaning areas for emblem adhesion, Nail polish for small vinyl repairs. I used a dab of black nail polish on the bottom edge (out of sight) of my passenger side bucket seat. A small hole of pencil lead size appeared and I put a dab of black on it and it hasn't gotten any larger since. Perhaps my wife was right, I don't need all those car tools and supplies I have in the garage, I'll just take hers.:D

I've used Peldge furniture polish on the vinyl as a substitute for Armorall.

Toothpicks for detailing, Handheld furniture steamers for seats and carpet stains, Toilet bowl brushes for scrubbing the backs of wheels or parts in the parts cleaner, News paper for windows and the things that always get me in trouble, those disappearing thick cotton Bath Towels.

Dawn dish soap for parts cleaning. Can't beat warm water and soap for delicate greasy parts.
Oven Cleaner for heavy grease and paint remover. Great for clean frames and suspension parts.
Baby-Oxy spray for taking stains out of carpet.
Bounce dryer sheets in the interior for a nice smell and keeps mice out...
Tooth brushes for clean small parts and removing auto wax around emblems.

Just to name a few... :D

The dishwasher works GREAT! I learned it from my step-dad. He rebuilt the carb on our 76 Pontiac a few times but it never worked quite right. He rebuilt it 1 last time and used the dishwasher for that "extra" cleaning and voila', the carb ran great for years. I have used it to clean a few parts. My wife is OK with it as long as it is only parts in the dishwasher.

I always steal my wife's spray bottles.

I've used the dishwasher for parts. It works GREAT. I clean them first with degreaser and the lots of soapy water to get all the crap off, then use the dishwasher for hte final cleaning. And ONLY when the wife is gone :)

I steal her cotton balls when I can't find my earplugs :)

Funny this should come up. I was working on my S-10 today and my fiance asked where the knife came from. I said, oh that's a steak knife I jacked from mom's kitchen over 10 years ago :D . She got a good laugh out of that.

I save old tooth brushes for cleaning parts. Turkey basters (although I don't take them from the kitchen anymore).

Dining table to use as a workbench for rebuilding a carburetor :)

I'm sure I've taken other items in a pinch, but they escape me at the moment.

measuring cups with a pour-spout work great for spill-free pouring of brake-fluid... much cleaner than trying to pour from a bottle, especially when the bottles are full. :)

Ya....I have used kitchen scissors for various jobs, steak knives, measuring cups, etc. I used my moms ice cube tray for one job I was doing to hold the nuts, etc.

That didnt go over to well.
