I own a 70 chevelle SS 396 4 spd. car (w/build sheet) that I am currently restoring. Some one put a small block in it that I removed to make room for the 396 that I need to find. I found two so far. The one is the correct date code and casting numbers but it has been decked (nothing on pad). The other is correct casting numbers and date coded CE block (warrenty replacement) which one should I buy that will hold the chevelles value?

Either 1 is acceptable ,but i would go for the decked block if it were still std bore oppsed to ce block if it was already at .030 or above along with price as a fator too,but either is ok.

It should be an 854 block for 70 396/402.

My friend paid $1000 for a correct dated coded 854 empty block with clean pad/no #'s(supposedly from factory that way not decked/but who knows) for his 70 ss 396 chevelle.(ouch!!!)
