Any differences between an original 621 bellhousing and the new reproductions????? Were they originally date coded????

The original 621's were not date coded. I don't know anything about the repros, but the originals are easy to find and shouldn't cost much to get a good one. I recently found a nice one on Ebay for $200.

The repo 621's are thicker/beefier throughout. The finish is a rougher texture, but fit is perfect. If not a #'s matching car, I would buy a new repo as I have been burned before on used GM bellhousings.

I bought a repo one in Carlisle for my friend's 67 for $150.00. That seemed to be the going price this last fall in Carlise.

This will be for my documented 70 LS5 M22 Chevelle. I want it too be as correct as possible.

Buy a used one the repro is thicker and a rougher cast like they said and the raised PN is of different font style lettering big difference, there about 150.00 to 250.00, Paragon Reproductions has them and you find alot for sale in Hemmings.

You just answered your own question in my opinion..

Repro is not the way to go if you are building a documented CORRECT as possible car.

Just my 3 cents

I've been restoring old vettes for a 32 years. There is a date code. It is not your typical month ,day, year, code. It is a circle with a month denominator I.E. a "7"for July in the top of the circle The circle has a line dissecting it in half. In the bottom half there are 1 to 5 little cast dots to establish what week of the month it was cast. Probably more info than you needed to know, but Corvette guys are over the top with this stuff!

Yep, I have that on my 444 bellhousing. I couldn't decipher the darn thing but it was there.

As Scottysalesman said, these bellhousings are indeed date coded by month and week. There are two circles with casting info on them. One is for casting changes and revisions and the other is a casting date.

I think I just learned something:thumbsup: Mine has a C with 4 dots. Does this mean March/4th week? How about a year code?

yep, March 4th week. The lucky thing is there is no year designation!

Anyone know the finish on the bellhousing. Did they paint them or leave them natural or partial paint them????

They got engine paint overspray as the engine was painted. But so did the exhaust manifolds and it burned off rather quickly.
If you're building a museum piece, that's one thing, but for a driver or even a show car, I'd just leave the bellhousing natural. If you happen to have the bellhousing attached to the engine when you paint the engine, and some overspray gets on the bellhousing then so be it, but I wouldn't be too overly concerned about putting orange paint on the bellhousing. 999/1000 people probably won't be worried about it.
