Here is a link to some chassis dyno pulls pull I made prior for the pump gas drags - I was asked to post it but I was really busy preparing for the event - then I forgot.

The dyno is good for 1000 rwhp - then the numbers go whacky. Well, the numbers went wacky. Once the spray was on, they read anywhere from 800 to 2000hp - a scatterplot. graemlins/beers.gif

Not sure how much power it really made, my guess would be over 1100 at the tires. The smoke is because my 93 octane tuneup is really fat (5:1 N/F) and my timing is rolled back because pump gas burns so fast - it looks like a diesel as it burns out the pipes... 16 deg total timing.

I broke a wrist pin on my second run in the pump gas drags so I was out of the running, but at least my first pass got won me "fastest mph" and "most out of control car" and there is a vicious rumor floating around that I might even be on the August cover! fingers crossed! :D

My first run - it spun so bad leaving with EIGHT degrees of total timing that I blew the tires off in 1st and 2nd instantly, lifted a few times then dumped it in third about 100 feet out and went 157mph through the traps to a 9.55. graemlins/sad.gif

Texas70, Go to the Comp. Cams website and download the video at the bottom of the page. 66chevelle283 is the marina blue 1966 and is i believe the third car to run. He did spin pretty badly and lifted a couple of times on the run.

What I like best is the madcap laugh/giggle at the end of the first dyno video smile.gif

It really is a shame the wrist pin let go - but then again I'm not sure the hot rod world is ready for a pump gas, street licensed and insured, running a 160 mph 1/4 mile. Too bad that they chose so little track prep, yours was not the only contender that went slip sliding down the track. I knew your car would run a high mph given the altitude of your home track and how fast you run there.

what were the rear wheel torque numbers?

Texas 70, I'm still pretty computer illiterate, I just typed in Competition Cams on my Google taskbar and pressed search. I got back several choices of which i chose Comp-Main. This displayed a page with four different color sections of Competition Cams departments and had (2004 Pump Gas Drag Race) at the top of the page and selecting this will download the Video to your Windows Media Player. If you still can't get it maybe one of the other members can suggest how it can be accesed. Sorry i can't be of more help.

here is a better video that someone graciously provided for me:

http://66283.150m.com/Ryan/pgdlump.wmv

Harold, I lifted more than a few times - once in first, twice in second, and it spun until about half track in third! Considering my 60 foot was off more than FOUR TENTHS from what I ran last time at my home track (Oct 2003), plus the lifting, it's safe to say it would have been mid 8's at 160+.

CDN SS, I will be around in July - car will likely still be under construction but you are welcome to drop by. Send me an email and we can hook up. Maybe beaumontgeno will take us for a ride - his turbo small block car is cranky!

SS454, I didn't really pay attention to the dyno numbers much - especially torque. I was just trying to put a load on it so I could tune nitrous/pump gas. It was much easier than I thought - I think that a person can literally get away with "murder." This "limit yourself to 250 or 300hp on 93" business is conservative!

MAT, engine is completely tore down. Here's the play by play:

#6 wrist pin broke, rod beat the heck out of the cylinder, then the lifter valley. Pin broke under compressive load by the marks on the underside of the piston and the lack of damage on the head - very minor touch on the outside of the chamber - no welding required. Rod went through the lifter valley so the block is junk, 2 oliver rods are required, gotta send the crank to lunati for a minor journal repair and straightening/heat treat, 3 pistons (2 from scrapnel) - I have 2 spares but I will need to order minimum 4 which is ok by me. 2 pushrods (I have 4 spares). Cam is bent and hurt - when the rod hit the cam and bent it, caused the keyway on the belt drive to shear, valve timing was off a bit so all the exhaust valves touched but they might not even be bent. They are not Ti so they will be cheap. All jesel rockers seem ok but I will press new bearings in them just in case.

Turns out I had the wrong JE series wrist pins for my application so it was a preventable failure - I will not let my machinists order parts for me again - I will call direct for any parts and then I can only blame myself.

On the bright side, the tuneup was spot-on - all the plugs looked great - piston tops all black. Could add 2 or 3 degrees of timing on 93 and still be ok.

Other than the block, it will not be that expensive to fix. My block was an old Mark IV so the new merlin III block with priority mains oiling, thicker cylinders, and extra head bolts will be an improvement. I was just about to order a smaller camshaft anyways. 2 rods and a few pistons are relatively inexpensive. Crank repair will be $300. I was due for valvesprings and roller lifters so the block is the only thing that really hurts.

Hey 66 283, Your car definately wasn't biting at all. Maybe it would be wise to back up some on the hit. My sons 540 made similar motor power (646 RWHP) but less on a smaller N2O hit (888 RWHP). A progressive controller or a two stage would probably be able to get down the track O.K. Six thirty twos are kinda torquey and require finesse to get the most out of. A racer from northern Kansas comes down here to our shootout races with a 632 with Big Chief Heads, runs high 7.7s. Several more cars around here running low 8s. One blown Camaro here runs 8 teens at 170 MPH. Dynoed on the Dynojet at Springfield, Mo. 1096 H.P. and over 1000 lb. ft. of torque and he's too slow to compete with Stan, the man, Williams's 632 with three stages of N2O. You might also consider putting a Powerglide in the Chevelle to control downtrack spinning.

You might also consider putting a Powerglide in the Chevelle to control downtrack spinning. All good advice - I can leave wide open on the fogger at my local track because the density altitude is typically 5500 to 6000 feet - typically a 12% correction factor. I went 1.38 leaving on 300hp up here last time out (Oct 2003) - I have an ultimate II tach and the driveshaft playback showed that it only spun the tires a couple of turns then hooked.

Also, I have a msd 7531 traction control, slew rev limits etc which a lot of the radial tire guys use - it is THE tool to hook my car - unfortunately our local track didn't open until after the PGD's so I couldn't get it dialed in. The plan was to dial it in at Memphis TNT's but the tues TNT I found that jetting up 3 sizes wasn't enough - didn't have big enough jets at the track so had to shut it down. Put it on the chassis dyno on the wed to find it needed a comp maxjet 124 jet!! about 10 sizes from Calgary.

Then at the thurs tnt I got one pass before it poured rain so couldn't really tune the traction box.

I know I could get it consistently in the 8's with only laptop tuning - it will just take time.

There are lots of 632's cranking out big hp numbers, but keep in mind I am LOW CR on PUMP gas. I know that if I had 15:1 and 3 stages it would make 1800hp like everyone else but then I wouldn't be able to street drive it!

I wanted a glide but the monster ones that will take the abuse are out of my price range. I run TH400's because they are dirt cheap and my buddy builds them for a case of beer. I can buy FOUR of my beefy TH400's for the price of a glide.

I need to get a tighter converter so I can leave at lower RPM to kill torque and need to get my traction control dialed in and then I'll be dangerous.

Ryan,

Great videos and info. I am also suprised what you can do on pump gas and a snoot full of nitrous. Are you using a Prock tune ? I remember us emailing back and forth discussing the pros and cons of these hi hp nitrous pump gas tunes. Sucks it broke a wrist pin. I live down the street from JE and just picked up the pins for my 572.

I will be very curiuos what the results of your testing will be when you get the 7531 dialed in. I will be using one on my backhalved 3000 lbs. Vette when I get it back on the road. It seems like the way to get them down the track. Particuarly when you are trying to control a huge hit of the line, of just a few tenths after launch.

Good luck on the mag cover, your car certainly deserves it.

Harold, that black blown camaro is awesome. I heard you talk about a yellow Chevelle in Oklahoma a few times, I'm wondering if thats the same one that was in Car Craft (along with the blown Camaro) that has a 565 BBC that made 679 rwhp and 655 rwtq and runs 9.20s@149 on the motor? Owner is Mike King. Hahahaha, I just re-read the article and it says "Mike and fellow club member and Tulsa resident Brian Sutton had $500 riding on whose 70 Chevelle could post higher horsepower numbers." I guess that would be your son smile.gif

Yes, Jeff flowed the fogger. My balls were not big enough to spray that much on pump gas - he was a great help. What pins did you buy? 52 series?

It is making big power for 93 octane - 157 might not seem that fast for some people, but it was mostly in third and the car scaled at 3932lbs.

You shouldn't need the 7531 if you are backhalfed, will you? It is a nice box - can't wait to do some tuning with it.

Pins # 990-2930-18-52S

These things look like they could come out of a fuel car, VERY think.

I am pretty sure the 7531 will be needed. The motor should make in the neighborhood of 900 hp N/A. 12.5 to 13.5 to 1, 572 (4.375 x 4.560) fabbed tunnel ram, big cam, conventional heads that flow 425 cfm, etc. I will spray up to 500 hp on top of that. I should have built a 632, but when I planned the motor it was not a back half car, oh well.

I am going to try the "take a bunch of timing out on launch" and feed it back to the car. Even if it is not needed the tuning ability of the 7531 is the closest thing you can get to FI and still have carbs. It should make it a lot easier to drive around on the streets.

I was a little suprised you would prefer a glide, that is a lot of weight you are pushing down the track. I am running one of Mike's turbo 400's. Sure is nice to have a bullit proof tranny.

Awesome that car is bada$$ graemlins/thumbsup.gif graemlins/hurray.gif is it mini tubbed? what size tires/rims

yes, those are 52 series - for some unknown reason I had 51 series in mine and apparently they can be brittle. don't know why je would provide them to me when I ordered CUSTOM NITROUS PISTONS! graemlins/angry.gif

I don't know if you will need the 7531 if you have big tires. I am making slightly more than what you are going for and I think if I had another inch or two of diameter and a tighter converter I could leave with everything, no traction control.

I thought the idea of dropping a bunch of timing would help, but in the run above I left the line wide open at EIGHT degrees total, ramped to 16 over 2 seconds and it blew the tires off instantly in 1st and 2nd. I think controlling the rpm curve with the slew rev limits will work better when I get the chance. If I tried leaving with much less than 8 with the spray on I think I would risk a backfire.

Mike's? I run "Grant's TH400." Good enough for me and my buds. Turnaround time is less than 6 beer and I have never hurt it during a run and I'm very abusive on drivetrain!

Ya, it's minitubbed. 15x10's with 5.5" backspace, 29x14.5" Hoosier DOT (29x12" tread.)

Next time out I plan to have a 31x10.5W or bigger on it.

I would be very graemlins/angry.gif graemlins/angry.gif  if they sent me the wrong pins when I ordered custom nitrous pistons for an 18* head 632. They sent me the wrong pistons for my 454 and when I complained about it they agreed to give me a better deal on the next set of pistons I ordered. I ended up with a connection over at Venolia so I will run those in the 572.

The fact you blew up your engine because of their mistake...they ought to give you a free set.

Ya think I can leave with all 1400 hp ? It will be a big tire car, something around 32-33 x 14-15.

SS454, Yea, I read the bulls**t they wrote in the article in Car Craft too. First off they only had $100 bet and yes my son is the other one only they didn't put my son's actual numbers up (636 hp-685 tq). Another club member purchased the yellow Chevelle after the Fall Nationals and King's Yellow Chevelle couldn't run 9.20 without N2O if his life depended on it. The yellow cars fastest run on the motor produced a 9.77 and the green car of my son's has been 9.56. My son's car has beaten the yellow car on two different occasions a total of four seperate runs, never lost to it and the bulls**ter who owned the car at the time welched on the $300 he bet on the race. (Not Mike King as Mike is a standup guy).
