try a local auto parts store. They ~might~ have one. It's the best and cheapest way to go!

Robert, hate to break it to you, but that's cheap for me. I wish I could get that price. How about $23 shipping for a fuel pump from summit? Just a regular Carter pump, can't weigh more than 3lbs. Wanna hear more? How about a 25lb box from NY for $83? Hate to say it, you guys are lucky when it comes to shipping. UPS is so bad, they're flat rate per lb to Hawaii. I've checked their rate calculator, and a 10lb box would cost the same from my sister's house in Maine, or my brother's house in SoCal. graemlins/sad.gif It can really hold you down on a project out here, you really have to budget the shipping in. I try to coordinate with friends when buying parts, so we can all split the shipping and save a little, if buying anything from the same company. It helps.

I bought something from them. Once. Same deal. Rather inflated shipping charge. NPD was more reasonable I believe. That was 4-5 yr. ago.

I bought a t-shirt for my 2yr. old daughter last year from OPG. The shipping and handling was $12 (OUCH)!! It took Fed Ex 9 days to get it from Cal. to Neb. I e-mailed them 3 times asking if they would ship UPS and they never replied. I know I didnt have to buy it but she looks so damn cute in it. Start em' out young!!!!

Robert,
I think all of you guys need to run your own business for a while, it would totally change your attitude.
I put a 3 lb package into the UPS computer from OPG's zip to Mattoon Il. It shows $8.20 shipping. Figure the box cost them 50 cents. That makes $8.70 Now they have an employee to pay for, lets say 15 min worth of time (a conservative estimate) to pull your part, box it up, print a shipping label, etc. If they are paying him $10 an hour, with all of the taxes, health insurance etc etc he is costing them at least $15 an hour so your 15 minutes worth cost them $3.25 Now we are up to $11.95 cost just for the S&H
Next .. you bought $45 worth of parts. I am betting that OPG's gross profit margin is no more than 20% on this stuff. That means that if they sold it to you for $45, it probably cost them $36. Now figure you paid with a credit card, there goes another 2% on your total of $61 ... $1.22 so lets look at what we have so far ...

You paid ....... 61.00
parts cost ..... -36.00
credit card .... - 1.22
S&H costs ...... -11.95
-------
Profit .... $11.83

Now ... we havent paid the salesman yet, or the phone company for the 800 number call that you made, or the "free" catalog you got that probably cost them a few bucks, or the rent, electric, taxes, heat, or any of the other bills that come along with running a business. Don't forget about he cost of having that part sitting on the shelf all year long. Believe me, when all is said and done, I bet the bottom line was probably a couple of dollars profit on your purchase.
Just wanted to show it to you from a different perspective smile.gif

Check out www.oldmusclecars.com (http://www.oldmusclecars.com) . Their shipping prices are more realistic *actually CHEAP compared to the rest*- AND they have good customer service AND good quality parts to boot AND :D a kick a** catalog that is also a SUPER reference.

Im sure they have a lot of the same overhead as all the other restohouses, BUT they just dont choose to stick it to the customer in shipping costs. Not sure how they do it, maybe because they are part of a Chevy Dealer. Could be they get discounts on the Original GM stuff and offset that with lower shipping charges..Could be they dont outsource many things? Their prices are pretty darned (sometimes too be good to be true, yet they are true) good on lots of stuff.

They jack you by charging freight based on the dollar amount of your purchase, not by the weight of the item. SCAM!

Thats a pretty pricy area to be in to begin with. Plus the nice new building in a nice industrial park... Not to mention cost of living for their employees... I can see why their prices are high...

When shopping for parts, I take into account the shipping, taxes, and customer service, along with the quality of parts I have receieved before, and finally, I look at the shipping time. If I need something quickly, I will look for someone nearby, if not, I might choose someone "back East."

I try very hard not to order just one small thing.
Saves money.. sort of. Same way your wife buying things only when on sale saves you money.

I haven't ordered from OPG in a good while since I'm working on the Camaro. But Classic Camaro, which is across the parking lot from OPG, raised there shipping charges a lot and sent me a form for a credit card.
Which coincidently offered free shipping when used for Cl. Cam. purchases.. Hmmm

I use YearOne for my big purchases now. Which is rare.. Only use CC or OPG when I'm in a hurry. Which is most of the time..
At least I feel like I get my money's worth from YO.
They usually air freight stuff to CA. Same price.

On what Billk said, the big mail order places use assembly line technique now for the shipping dept.
Might take 5 minutes to get a box to the outgoing stack. And I'm sure the volume shippers don't pay what the small guy does.

Edit.. There is the expensive part of HB. Well the really expensive, and the cheaper side of town. They used to be in the older section.

Summit used to be the cheapest on just about everything. Now it's getting so that you can save sometimes if you shop. Never seen a company get bigger and still stay the cheapest, or have the best service. But Summit is probably the closest/best. The place I used to get my motor cycle stuff from went from a small store in Riverside, CA to a huge store, 3 brand dealer, wharehouse, Race Team semi size Co. And screwed one of my orders up so bad I only use them in an emergency. After I'd been using them for 15yrs.
And now after all these years my local dealer can sell me stuff very close to their mail order price.

I'm starting to go back to the smaller companies now to get better service. Wolfplace for one..

Im about to order about $2000 worth of parts from Summit. It says free shipping by ground service and a $7.95 handling charge per order. Am i reading this right?

Now you see why I drove my corn-popper back to Summit at Akron, OH from Columbia, MO when I exchanged intakes and bought a cam to boot!!

But my corn-popper was getting like 50+ mpg at the time and gas was alot cheaper.

I had let the manifold slip past the year free restocking time limit and had to beg them to take it back, otherwise I woulda had to have kept it AND now I wished I had!!

I think with summit it's if it all fits in one box, otherwise I believe they charge a little more. Still a good deal though.

How about columbia house records, they are getting rich off what they charge people for shipping and handling.

You gotta watch EBAY, sell cheap, then charge you good for shipping, and then if you don't like the shipping charge they will hit you with poor feedback.

I always check the sellers feedback, and see what others have to say. EBAY has it's sharks, but then there are good people out there.

The only valid complaint is if the S&H costs were not disclosed before you agreeded to the sale. If they were disclosed, you could have said "that's too much" and gone else where... Not what some want to hear, but it's that simple. If you agree to pay, you have no right to complain about the deal!!

WELL i don't care to run or own a parts shop,i don't care about what the owners of these big part companys pay there workers, or what it cost to keep there light on or what there cost of the sale is , I WANT A GOOD PRICE AND A FAIR SHIPPING COST, WE DON'T KNOW WHAT MOST DEALER PAY FOR THE PARTS ONLY WHAT THEY SELL THEM AT,IF YOU DON'T LIKE THERE PRICE THEN FINE KEEP SEARCHING
AND YOU'LL FIND A PRICE OUT THERE THAT IS FAIR .AS SHIPPING COST , WE CAN JUMP ON LINE AT ANYTIME AND SEE WHAT A 3LBS BOX COST TO SHIP ,THATS HARD TO HIDE THAT COST , NOW WHAT A SELLER MAKES ON A PART IT SELL WELL THAT HARDER TO TELL.

I wont buy from OPG or Year One because of the inflated shipping costs. I orderd 4 emblems and was charged $42 for 2nd day or $16 for regular, they could have put them into an envelope and shipped next day for a fraction of the cost. Too many places are scamming us on shipping and "handling" charges, they need to put the profit in the product not the shipping charges.

And BTW, I've owned two business's and currently own one for 8 years now... I know what costs are to doing business....I would never lower the parts cost then jack up the shipping costs!

Call Summit and tell them what you need. If someone else has it cheaper tell them and they will look it up on there computer and beat the competitors price! As a consumer you are entitled to negotiate a price , if the company agrees and works w/ you , that company will stay in buisness a long time. The old saying " Give the customer what he wants ".

Agree on Summit, or a local parts store...for items like that I like to support the local economy even if it costs a "cup of coffee" more...

Someone said above $23 shipping charge from Summit to ship a fuel pump...that can not be right, cause Summit does not charge for ground shipping, only a "handling charge" which is fixed at $9 or something....

I bought a horn button from YO and was charged $9 shipping and handling. You could have dropped it in an envelope and snail mailed it for under a buck. I live about 4 1/2 hours from them. I now deal with NPD and GU.

That was Cameano, who lives in Hawaii. Shipping to Hawaii is A LOT more than shipping within the lower 48 states. Hawaii and Alaska cost more. So it IS right, he should know - he paid the bill.

I'm with DjD on this topic. Furthermore, most restoration catalogs (heck most mailorder catalogs period) show a shipping cost schedule. Sometimes it's based on weight, other times on dollar amount. Sometimes it's based on actual shipping costs. If it's not what you want to pay, go somewhere else. The speed shops where I live GOUGE you at retail price for parts. I'd rather pay shipping than get bent over the table  . I've been burned by Classic Muscle on shipping. $80 to ship two inner fenders and some other parts from back East to California. They never told me to cost, I didn't inquire, but boy was I mad when I saw the $80 cost. My fault, move on. But overall, I do agree that OPGI has some high shipping costs. If you live within a few hours drive of their store, best to drive. Then visit the nearby beaches to see the g-strings

Hey Dirty!! My friend Tony over at Speed Merchant told me they are restructuring their pricing to be competive with the mail order catalogs. Might want to give them a call next time you are ready to order something and see what they can do... Don't forget, alway ask the guy at the counter if the price he quoted you is the best they can do. More times than not, Speed Merchant, Mitchell Bros, Winchester Auto will knock off a bit more. Pep Boys, Kragan and those types usually won't but it's worth the asking, espically the late shift guys...

I just got about $100 in small parts from OPGI. Shipping and handling was $8.95 - seems okay. The only reason I like them is they got it all in one catalog. Ground Up, however, is still my favorite - and not just because they are a sponsor - but because they have actually HELPED me find hard to find parts.

Best,

It's good for 5 to 10% off on car repair items like brake pads, gaskets, and water pumps. Nothing off on maintenance items like oil.
I still pay sales tax (on a lesser amount) because I don't have a resale license. With 7 cars they want my business and expect me to give it to them. If I only show up once a year I know they will pull the account.
Even though these are a chain auto parts store, the manager is rated by the dollars the store pulls in. The more sales he can produce, the better his rating. Bottom line is just ask the manager. Worse he can say is no.

Not that I'm defending OPG or anyone else, but I ordered a bunch of stuff from them a while back, most of it was back-ordered. After more digging, I found the same stuff at a better price so I called them and asked to cancel all of the back-ordered stuff. I even told them why. That left me with one $8.00 part. They sent it free, only charging 4.95 S/H. That isn't so terrible now is it?
