I have a 71 Chevelle that had a correct buildsheet under the rear seat. It matched the car properly. Here's the kicker- there was another one under the front seat that wasn't close to matching the car! The only thing I can think of is there must have been a seat change from another car during it's life. Never expected a buildsheet there. Anyone ever run into something like this?

I have a car right now that when the sheet was pulled out of the front, drivers bucket seat back, was 18 VIN's away from the car. So more than likely, the set of seats put in the car from new were intended for another car. This is a rare occurance, but it does happen. Keep in mind that there were more than one sheet, and it has happened often that more than one correct sheet has been found. If the sheet is close in VIN, than it was likely to have happened when produced. If not, than someone switched the seats somewhere in its life. New car dealers would even switch seats if they had an ordered car with a seat defect, and another one in stock with the same seat. Thought being that they would switch the seat quick so as not to give the guy with the ordered car any time to change his mind and not buy it.

Remember, there was no steadfast rule for what to do with build sheets when they were finished with them. Anybody that has a build sheet is lucky a worker stuck it with the car. If a worker has 3 consecutive build sheets and the first 2 cars are already down the line, guess what the third car got, 3 different build sheets.

There have been Chevelle owners who found El Camino or even Monte Carlo build sheets in cars and in places like under the carpets. Obviously tossed there as a trash can or landed there inadvertently. As for being in the seats, once could surmise that many cars of the same seat type came down in a row and some how they got mixed up on the conveyor or someone in the trim shop just stuck the wrong sheet in the seat. Keep in mind these jobs were repetitive, year in and year out, the SOS.

All the feeder lines in the plant used the build sheet as work orders.

A build sheet in a seat doesn't necessarily belong in that seat. Years ago I owned a 70 Chevy pickup. The seat had a build sheet for a 70 GMC pickup, but the seat color didn't match the GMC. It matched the Chevy. The seat went into the correct pickup, but the build sheet for the GMC was disposed of in the Chevy.
I also found a build sheet for a Van Nuys built 70 Monte Carlo in the rear seat of a Van Nuys built 70 Camaro. Obviously, the seat in the Camaro was a Camaro seat, not a Monte Carlo seat. That was just another case of disposing of a useless Monte Carlo build sheet in the nearest car.

According to an old gent I know here who worked in the assembly plants, workers would often screw things up on purpose to get back a supervisors or GM. He said he was a production shift supervisor in a auto transmission plant for many years. They were having quality control issues with transmissions failing on the final car assembly lines before they even made it out the door. Come to find out there was a worker in his unit that hated him and would leave out parts in the trans every now and then. The worker just plain hated his boss and even wanted to kill him. Not mention union issues back then were rampant.

We found one for an Oldsmobile under the carpet in our '72. It was in great shape too. Unfortunately it was the only one we found.:(

I Didn,t Find Mine Yet But Is There A List Of Buildsheets That Were Found In Other Cars That Might Help Someone Restore Their Car?

I have some build sheets like you mention entered into my chevelle orphan vin list. If anyone has one that was in the wrong car, I would like to enter it into the list. Contact me on what I need for list when I enter it.

BTW, I was looking at a 70 elky balto built in a junkyard in RI and I found a build sheet in the back of the seat (drivers side) for a olds so anything is possible.

I also found in a 66 belair 4dr, three build sheets all to different cars but not the one I found them in. A biscayne 2dr then a biscayne 4dr and then another biscayne were assembled in a row before it.
