I have a 502 with a Comp cam in my 69. It does not smoke, it passed the leak down test the Chevrolet dealer did on it, but man does it use the oil. I drove from my house to Springfield MO, about 200 miles, used a 1qt, same coming back. I have driven a couple hundred miles here around town, and, I'll be doggone if it isn't down another qt. Do any of you other boys with 502's have this problem? Edd

Does not leak, and passed leakdown test, that still leaves a couple of things. Valve guides, valve guide seals or a leak beneath the intake manifold. That is a lot of oil use. What do the plugs look like?

I thought that some of the 502's came with low tension oil rings which would cause some oil consumption. I can't remember if this was changed or not.

For whatever reason, I have a Gen VI that supposedly had low tension oil rings and it never (knock on wood) uses oil. I did the break in with straight 30W (old school) and then went to 10-30W.
