My 396 (30 over) is an good motor, has 1 slightly weak cylinder on a compression check, still ran 13.4 in my 68. Has 063 heads on it, doesn't smoke. Complete except no pulleys, with HEI, 750 Holley DP. Cam is (I was told) a comp Extreme 262, gives a good lope, car pulls well to around 5500, think the heads choke it above that. What do they go for?

If you know someone that knows you and knows the engine/has heard it run, I just sold mine a couple months ago for about $2k.

I tend to agree... If someone can hear it start and run, even if just on a stand or bolted to a chassis, it will make a big difference...
IMO, $1500-$2000 for running, mostly complete motor. Missing pulleys might hold it down a bit, instead of being "complete"
Not running, just sitting on a stand or the floor, $750-$1500, IMO... Depends on who is looking, and how much they trust the condition...

I paid $875 for a 402 about a month back. It most likely would have ran the way it was, but I didn't want to take the chance and tore it apart to rebuild. It came with carb, but that was about it. No pulleys, brackets or water pump. Had the 049 heads
It came out of a 69 Chevelle, and I was told it ran when pulled. I had all intentions of rebuilding though, so even if I had heard it run, I most likely still would have rebuilt it
