: cam recom. for zz502 wolfie, harold, gary.
Ralph67 Sep 21st, 04, 2:28 PM alright guys, Wolfie, Luni Harold,Gary at gmpp and anyone else with some experiance here. I need a cam.lifter.spring, recommendation for a zz502. The 5200rpm rev limit is just to low smile.gif . Its a 4 speed car with 4:10 rears and as big a tire as i can fit in the slightly modified openings. carb will be whatever is needed. Other than maybe rod bolts i'm not likely gonna make any other mods and those may stay as well if i get a positive response to the stock ones. Thanks for your time, Ralph
70_chevelle Sep 21st, 04, 3:55 PM I and several other people have ran the crower 01405LM cam. This cam in my wifes 3500# camaro that runs high 10's at 3500' DA and very low 11's at 7000' DA. It's a good cam. If you want more details Email me, I have one available...
BTW, I thought it was a 5600RPM limit with the stock cam?

Harold Sutton Sep 23rd, 04, 12:25 AM Re-camming the ZZ 502 is a really good idea. I'd leave the bottom end alone as the stock high performance stuff is plenty strong. I've never seen high performance bottom end parts break at the 6200 RPM your going to run (rods or rod bolts) but i did know a guy who broke an aftermarket rod bolt the first time he ran it and lost an engine.
Ralph67 Sep 23rd, 04, 10:30 AM I think i agree about the bottom end. What about some cam recommendations.

Lee's 01405 LM recommnedation seems spot on! Lunati A3 grind would be a bit 'hairier'. The cam should be mid 240 duration hydraulic, or low 250 duration ( solid) and the LSA should be kept at 110 to help with cylinder pressure. If you'll take it higher than 6200, I personally would forgo the hydraulic and fit a solid cam in there. This would give you more RPM capability without sacrificing idle or low end. Because hydraulics are , well, soft and squishy!
Crane makes an easy-ramped SR in their SR246, which is the only swap I have personally helped with. Nice grind, mild lope at idle, 7000 all day long in a 510, but shifting at around 6500 or so. Springs are moderate, believe they were 175 seat 440 open is all. HR would be a much simpler swap. SR would add 5%-10% more power.
You're going to have no problem with low end with those gears! You'll be able to smoke 'em at 55mph!!!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Wolfplace Sep 23rd, 04, 1:17 PM Hyd roller I'm assuming??
The above Crower would be excellent but I don't particularly like the advertised duration depending on where it is rated from.

Use the new "Beehive" springs and it should go to 63-6500 from what I understand.
I haven't used the new spring yet but have had people who's opinion I trust tell me they seem to work very well with good lifters.
UDHarold Sep 25th, 04, 1:56 AM My recommendation for immediate use would be a Lunati special grind hydraulic roller, as you already have the lifters.
I'd use the 288/296HR10, it is 236/244 at .050, .600"/.600" valve lift, and 110 LSA.
In a 9.2:1 CR 540, it pulled 630 BHP on 87 octane. In a little bigger note, Jim McGinn, who sometimes posts here, has a 69 Camaro with a 534 BBC (502 with a 4.25" crank) that uses my 308/308HR10, 255/255 at .050, .650/.650 valve lift, and 110 LSA. He drives it to the track and has run a 10.19 on throttle.....
These are both hydraulic rollers. I also have a 292/302HR10, with is 240/250 at .050, .600/.600 valve lift, and 110 LSA. They all have very decent parts life.
If you'd rather have a solid, let me know....

Ralph67 Sep 25th, 04, 11:57 AM A hyd. will work fine (to lazy to adj. a solid all the time) would the 308/308hr10 be a better choice considering the 4:10 rears, how would the vacume be with these cams,it would be great to be able to re-use some of the valve train parts that are stock with the zz502 what changes do you recommend with any if these cams. Don't need one just yet but i want to know what i'm looking at to finish my budget. Thanks for your time it is appreceiated. Ralph
pdq67 Sep 25th, 04, 10:23 PM Harold,
What's the float rpm on the 288/296 and 308/308 hy-rollers nowadays?? Just generally is all??
Everybody knows I'm scared to death of a solid roller b/c of the possibility of eating a roller axle is the only reason I ask..
AND I know that dreaded old, "more power, Scottie" bug IS gonna bite me sooner or later...
