: Question for those with 3" exhaust.
I bought a Jegs 3" header back kit, I also bought Flomaster 3" Delta 3 chamber muflers offset in/center out.
This is going on a 69 Chevelle with a 1965 GM 12 bolt (narrower than a 69) and 10" SS mags with 5.5 back spacing.
Will I have problem with the center out?
I have been told that it would allow me to get the tail pipe closer to the frame at the rear?
I was thinking this might be good for tire/shock clearance?
Has anyone had expierence with this?
Or should I send them back and get the ofset in/ ofset out muflers?
Any help (pictures) will be appreciated. graemlins/clonk.gif T.C.
mr 4 speed Dec 16th, 04, 1:32 PM Jake used offset inlet/center outlet mufflers with his Jegs 3" system.
Thanks for the reply:
We discussed this before in fact I think thats why I got the ones I did, but I never seen any pictures or heard how the completed system fitt?
I'm getting close to that stage in my build and wanted to be sure I have the correct parts when I attempt to install the exahust.
If I need to return the mufflers I would rather do it now so it wont hold me up.
Thanks T.C.
2k3Chevelle468 Dec 16th, 04, 4:18 PM My 3 inch mandrel bent exhaust has offset mufflers also. The fit is extremely nice and tucks up really clean.
So thats one vote for in/out offset?
Any pics?

69ssmike Dec 16th, 04, 5:31 PM I have the Torque Tech with Dynomax? mufflers, offset on both ends and fits perfect. Mike
hoffbug Dec 16th, 04, 5:46 PM I have the dual offset straightline performance 22" large case mufflers with the 3" torque-tech tails. Its tight, but it all fits. The tire is close to the tail pipe with a Hoosier 9" slick mounted on an 8.5" centerline auto/drag rim with 4 7/8" backspace. A 10" slick would rub on the tail pipes.
Bob West Dec 16th, 04, 9:18 PM My dynomax are center/offset and they tuck up under the car nicely, but I use dumps.
Thanks for the replys:
Looks as though the offset/offset are what most people are using.
I really want to use the tail pipes so the dumps are out.
hoffbug: do think that the center outlet would give you more clearance with your tires?

BillsCamino Dec 16th, 04, 9:27 PM My Ultraflows are 3" offset in/3" center out...but I use dumps.
I don't foresee a problem though if I had chose to run tails.
kjett Dec 16th, 04, 9:33 PM I run the large case Straightline Performance mufflers, too. They are offset/offset. I have 3" Torque Tech exhausts all the way out the back. I run a 28x10.5 ET Drag with no clearance issues at all. Wheels are 15x8 Weld draglites with 4.5" BS. Works and sounds great.
jakeshoe Dec 17th, 04, 2:15 AM Look at the system.
The tailpipes are split so that there is a bend coming off the muffler, going over the axle, then it dumps into the portion that cruves down, outward, rearward.
You can use either muffler, offset inlet is needed to keep the head pipes close to center, away from the floorpans.
Offset outlet will work, as well as center outlet, you have plenty of room to play.
You have room to "angle" the mufflers also.
You can move the muffler around enough that you effectively can move an offset to center or a center to offset as needed.
It is not a bolt on, one way only affair. It will require some trial fitting, cutting, trial fitting, trimming, final positioning, tach welding, double checking, and finish welding.
Thanks for the reply guy's
I guess I can just start trial fitting one side and see what goes?
Sounds to me either will work and the center offset me buy me some clearance with the shock and tire?

69ssmike Dec 17th, 04, 8:50 AM As Jakeshoe said I have the offsets and I angled my mufflers to gain clearance, also had to bend corner lips of gas tank for a little added clearance. Good luck, Mike
427L88 Dec 17th, 04, 9:29 AM I have offset/offset and I think I;d have an issue going to a 5.5" BS wheel for sure. THere's not much room between the tire and tailpipe now when I run the slicks. Center outlet would have given us more wiggle room on that.

T.C. In my case I think that using a center outlet would cause some fitment issues near where the tail pipe passes under the frame, and next to the upper control arm.
Maybe you could angle the muffler like Jake said... I have an X pipe crossover and I think that would have made for an awkward fit.
My advice to you is to have a set of tires and rims like you would like to run mounted on the car at the time of fittment. Then you can wrestle the pipes around to gain clearance and see if you like they way they look in that position before final attachment
You ALL have good ideas and it sounds like either will fit.
It also sound like I may gain a little with the center outlet, but I dont think I will know for sure untill I start to install the system.
My transmition got wet in the storms, sould be rebuilt this weekend and installed.
Then I can start on the exhaust, and then........ I can start up my new 468 .
