Hi...
My 70 Chevelle (non-tilt column, TH400) can be started without a key just by turning the cylinder. I can (at times) get it to lock into place by 'wiggling' the wheel some. Is a new lock cylinder all that I need or is there possibly another problem?
I found a link to some instructions for replacing the cylinder & looks like the wheel & turn signal stuff has to be eremoved to change the cylinder?
Can a new cylinder be 're-keyed' to match my existing door locks?
Thanks!

The lock is simply worn out, a common problem on GM cars. I can start my 86 Cutlass without the key also. The only fix is a new lock cylinder, and you are correct in saying the guts of the upper half of the column need to come out first.

Yes they can. They can be bought unkeyed so they can be rekeyed to match existing keys. You would have to see your local locksmith.

It is fairly easy to replace your ignition lock cylinder. You need a steering wheel puller and it is a good idea to purchase or borrow a lock plate compressor tool from your local automotive store. I have written fairly complete instructions on disassembly and repair of the A-car steering column.
Go to www.corvettefaq.com
Click on Jim Shea's Steering Articles
Click on A and F-Car Steering Papers
Scroll down to the 1969-76 Standard Steering Column Section
Download Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 and Disassembly & Repair Pic #1.

Update on my lock cylinder change.......
I purchased a new Delco lock cylinder from NPD. It came assembled & keyed. I took the new cylinder & old key to the locksmith & he could not 're-key' it because the old cylinder has a 'J' keyway & the new one has an 'E' keyway.
Does anyone know where I can get a new lock cylinder that can be keyed to a 'J' keyway?
Thanks!

I might have a good used one if you're interested (no charge)

What you need to replace your ignition with is a Strattec p/n 607893 replacement ignition which is a universal replacement for 1970 Chevelles with 'J' keyway. These are usually available from locksmiths specializing in automotive locksmithing. If you can't find one, I should have a couple on hand. Cost is about $25.
