: Upholstery shop prices
FlameOut Jan 12th, 08, 11:33 AM Just curious as to what some of the prices are in other areas. I recently bought new Legendary covers for the front buckets of my 67, along with new foam.
I called a local upholstery shop, to get a price for them to install new covers, and was a little surprised at the price they gave me. I paid a little over $200 for the covers and foam, and the shop wanted $175 each, to do my seats!
Just ordered the hog ring pliers and rings from GroundUp. I'll attempt them myself before paying that.

That's about the right price to install.
Donnie1 Jan 12th, 08, 1:15 PM i can get a set of buckets done for $100 to $150

That's a good price. Location, and overhead have a lot to do with the price you pay,I had a guy working for my last year that was from PA and he said that the shop he was working for was getting $225.00 per seat to install customer supplied seat cover's.
JWA Jan 13th, 08, 12:05 PM Yeah but when you price shop make sure you get the details. Some places are really thorough and actually replace the burlap, rebuild/custom fit the "new foam", repair/weld the broken springs. More than likely the lower priced folks are not as thorough. A good upholstery person usually can have a waiting list for work.
JWagner Jan 13th, 08, 12:19 PM Putting them on is not really all that difficult, but it is time consuming. So, you would be paying for shop time. I have done a few bench seats and would encourage you to do it yourself. Make sure that you keep all the old uphostery on hand until the job is completely done. That old stuff will show where the hog rings go and where the variuos folds were made.
g-man65 Jan 13th, 08, 1:11 PM the only shop near me, and the guy is good & busy....wanted $300 to do a set of buckets....i thought the same, thats crazy!!.....until i did them, if theres a next time, surely worth the $300.....probably one of the most physically demanding jobs i've ever done....like wrasslin' an alligator out on my deck in summer heat....i probably have 16 hours into those seats!!...your hands will cry like a little baby:D
Greg Jan 13th, 08, 2:49 PM I live in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina, where the furniture industry has a strong presence.
Because of that, there are a lot of skilled, quality upholstery guys around.
That competition keeps the prices very reasonable.
I could get a pair of bucket seats redone here in a quality, workmanship manner for a very reasonable price.
In fact, there is an upholstery shop less than 2 miles from my house that does nothing but car interiors. He's been in business for quite a while, has a great reputation, and does strong work. So I'm fortunate in that regard.
Getting seats redone is not that big of an expenditure here.
The problem is guys wanting to sell a pair of dilapidated, ripped up, mildewed seats with rusted frames for $500 (talk about trying to squeeze the last drop of juice out of a grape!).
The seats that are in my Chevelle are high back cloth buckets from another make of car, that look somehwat out of place in a '68.
Personally, I refuse to pay $500 for a pair of essentially junk seats that I'd have to get completely redone, so I've been looking at new seats.
ProCar, in business for 25 years, makes a bucket seat that is a very good match for the interior of my Chevelle, and they sell for approximately $500 a pair...brand new.
To me, that's the best alternative.
Just my personal opinion.

69396ss Jan 13th, 08, 5:54 PM I've recovered seats and they turned out "OK"........
But is "OK" good enough?
As stated, to me, that few Hundred Bucks isn't worth 12 Hours of Blood sweat, tears and Blisters to me, especially with marginal results afterwards.
There are a few items, best left to the pro's.
Seat Covers is one of them and for the price you have to pay for the Covers themselves, you want them to be crisp and tight.
I can't imagine buying the Best and most expensive covers out there "Legendary", and putting them on yourself with a less than Perfect crisp professional finished product.
67shovel Jan 14th, 08, 9:25 AM I'm pretty handy building cars. Can do motor & tranny assembly, complete paint jobs, headliners and most trim so I thought I'd try to replace my A body seat covers. After trying to dissasemble the first bucket I loaded the whole mess up and brought them to the upholstery shop and got them back at $350 total. The best part is when I looked at them the back and seat upholstery lines were off 1/4" and said "fix this right or no pay". If I had done them myself and got that close I would have been happy.

I have the pro car rallys in my 68 and they don't look too out of place. They do sit a little tall though. They will be replaced with a set of factory headrest seats as soon as I drop them off to be recovered. I did one pair of seats 10 years ago and while they were decent my hands are much more suited to other tasks. I also need some camaro seats done so I am killing my tax return quickly

The Pro Car Rally's are nice, but here's the ones I'm getting.
They're also made by Pro Car. I believe they have more of a "period" look to them, and will blend in real good with the rest of the 1968 interior.
Plus, they are fresh and brand new.

JWA Jan 14th, 08, 11:48 AM I think they look too European :D But it's your car and if you like them, that is what counts.
Greg Jan 14th, 08, 3:32 PM I think they look too European.
Really?
I don't see a huge difference between these and original buckets.

Hey, by the way, the seat below is the "Rally" seat that you have in your 68 Chevelle, correct?
If so, you're right...those wouldn't look out of place at all in a '68. :noway:

Freddy Mercado Jan 14th, 08, 6:42 PM I have seen the pro's do it. It is well worth the money. Get it done right.
jandd_257@hotmail.com Jan 14th, 08, 7:48 PM Bill,
Not sure if you would be interested but there is a shop in Ambridge. Fitzgerald's. The phone # 724-266-4969, ask for downstairs Dave. He did my headliner and carpet.
gatorbob Jan 14th, 08, 8:38 PM Just so ya know I just had mine redone (just new foam) reused the covers they were in great shape. 126$ that included tax. I bought the pre shaped foam from OPGI. It came out ok. Only had to do the drivers side. Didn't ever sit in the passengers seat (only had it since Sept 1st) and put it away in early November. Good luck! This is in Rochester NY

The picture for factory seats you have is not the 68 Chevelle pattern and IMO the rally seat stitching is a closer match to the 68 pattern. The smaller stitching is what makes the seat you like, look like it belongs in a European car. Does your back seat have the incorrect pattern like the front seats you have pictured? My Rally's were something to try til I could score the correct seats for my 68. They weren't ever meant to be a permanent addition. BTW one other cost you might want to add to the seats you like is the Chevelle specific floor mounts. They are an additional cost ($59.95 per seat at summit).
Here is the correct 68 Chevelle seat pattern:

Greg Jan 15th, 08, 10:16 AM The rally seat stitching is a closer match to the 68 pattern.
Jeff, IMO, the styling of the "Rally" seats, with their high backs and large bolsters, is so much different than the rest of a '68 Chevelle interior, that any concern of whether the stitching pattern is or isn't similar to the back seat is really a moot point...
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/2638/rallygi2.jpg
On the other hand, with the seat that I picked out, the style and design is much more period correct, which allows it to blend in very well with the rest of a '68 Chevelle interior (in spite of the fact that the width of the stitching may not be identical to that of the back seat), as evidenced by this picture of a '68 interior with the seats installed...

Again, just my humble opinion Jeff.

You are entitled to your opinion and the pic in the car shows that in black they don't look too much different to me either. Out of the car pic makes them look like a European car seat. Just so you know the Rallys are not any taller than the seat you pictured.
deeboe Feb 1st, 08, 9:46 PM where?
gatorbob Feb 2nd, 08, 1:32 AM Carl's at ridge and dewey next to the post office.
64elkynss Feb 2nd, 08, 4:07 PM I am very seriously considering the Procar seats for my Elky, mainly because there's no back seat to worry about matching the stitch lines up to. Then I can take the buckets I had redone at a total cost of $1000 and put them in the SS to replace the originals so I'll no longer have to fall thru to the floor when I sit on them. I stripped the buckets down to the bare frames, had the frames blasted, primed and painted, bought PUI covers, new foams, replaced a couple of springs and had a shop do the grunt work and I'm toally happy with the finished product! $1000 may be out of many people's budgets, but for ME personally, was more than worth it. I really like the look and am trying to stay that way with most of the car, so in turn I pay somewhat for that style. Now that I know about Procar, they will get a serious look from me. 64elkynss
RedSS454 Feb 4th, 08, 3:21 PM Hi Guy's, we just had our seats done by R and R seats in Plainview NY Ron is one of the nicest people we have meet.I gave him all the seat material bought from Ground up with the foam on a thursday and he was done by tuesday and delivered them to my house.
They came out great. looks better then when it came from the factory.
we have 3 companies within 20 min drive that do seals.
one guy quoted me over the phone $800.00
the second guy told me he would take 3 to 4 months( he was busy) and would not give me a price.
Ron was 1/2 the price and boy were we happy.

I have talked with a few other people on different boards from up around your way and they all say the same thing. 90% of the upholstery shop up there are way too over priced or do horrible work. I can't say one way or the other,as I have never seen any of their work, but I have seen some of the written quotes that they have given people. One guy got quoted $325.00 to install a headliner in a 69 Camaro, and he was suppling the headliner.
Auldron Feb 5th, 08, 6:08 PM Do You guys know anyone in the Northern Virginia Area? I hate these Summit Racing buckets in my Chevelle?
