Maybe someone can help me with this. I just bought a 72 #289 block complete 454 for my 72LS5 454 CHEVELLE SS. i checked all the casting numbers such as exhaust manifolds, intake ,heads, carbureator and block which are all 72 dated.Motor is completely original after tearing down as it looked since the pistons were standard bore im assuming there original.NOW MY QUESTION is the front of the block where they machine the numbers in that front pad it just has one set of numbers and no partial of the vin like they usually stamp right after the first set. Does this mean its a replacement block? ANy help would be appreciated.

There should be another set of numbers right next to those which would include the partial VIN.

I found the partial vin on my 70 Chevelle on the bell housing flange just above the oil filter boss. The numbers are very difficult to see, and I only found mine when the engine was out of the car for a rebuild. The numbers are on the driver's side at the back of the engine on the verticle pad just above the oil filter.

Actually not 'air' but A.I.R. (smog pump equipped)

I have a '68 Mailbu with the CE code on the passenger side engine pad. It also has a partial VIN on the pad as well. Does this mean that it is not number matching?

The "CE" means Chevrolet Engine (normally warranty or over the counter replacement) the numbers give tracking information for warranty on replacement. So......... no its not the original engine.

Dave,
So what your telling me is that even with partial VIN and the CE code, that this motor was most likely a replacement that they stamped the partial VIN in when they put it in the vehicle?! Does that lower the value of my "Matching numbers" Malibu?
