Any idea what kind of raw power it takes to get a 4000lb car into the 11s on regular street radials, assuming a 2.1 60'?

I had a 3400 lb car (w/o driver) that put 430hp to the ground and ran 12.0 to 12.1 at 117-120 mph with 60' times in the 1.9 to 2.0 range. Based on that I'd guess 500 rwhp might do it.

I would say approx 650 flywheel HP or 550 RWP.

How do you figure out how much rear wheel hp you have by your flywheel hp?? I think someone told me with an auto tranny you lose about 1/3 of it before it gets to the ground.

15% to 20% loss through the drivetrain is a general guideline for an automatic.

69 Ratt,

I just spent like 10 min searching for your combo I know I've seen it on here somewhere, but I have trouble with this search engine and came up empty handed..
got a link to the post or a combo list or something?

A guy in town has ran 12.2@120 and 11.9@107 (letting off), on 245/60R15 street radials with his 514 BBF 70 Fairlane. Its gotta weigh close to 4000 lbs with driver. Its putting out approx 630-650 hp, easily.

365 RWHP in a 3518 lb car with 245-60R15 BFG T/A radials. 3.55 gears and 3000 stall.

Ran 11.97 @ 113 MPH in my Camaro with a 1.87 60' time. When 60' times were 2.0-2.1 (more typical) it ran 12.2's.

It takes a lot of patience and practice getting the technique down. I found that if they prepped the track I could get out of the hole OK by feathering the gas just a little.

The real problem was the 1-2 shift, since there was no track prep at the shift point several times the tires went up in smoke at the 1-2 shift so I found I got best results short-shifting by about 500 RPM.

PS. and more power would not help IMO. The times seem to be limited by the amount of power you can get down to the track in the first 330-660 ft. More power just makes it harder to launch and get a clean shift - extra HP would add a bunch to your MPH though.

the fastest i have ever gone in street trim..........driving the car to the track doing nothing more the letting air out of my back tires is

12.18 @ 110 mph with a 1.71 60 ft time

heres my combo.....

3600 lbs with driver 81 camaro
3.70 posi with bald ass 275/60-15 bf tires 18 psi
th350 with 3500 stall
thru 2 1/2" exhaust and turbo mufflers
396 bbc
11.7 to 1 compression
iron heads ported with 2.19/1.88 valves
old side ways single plane intake
850 holley double pumpers
summit headers
262/273 @ .050 cam with .561/.600 lift(1969 ZL-1 cam)

ran on 92 octane fuel with dist locked out at 36 degrees at idle.....

i have a nice 8x10 on the wall of one of the launches of that day and it shows those street tires wrinkling the side wall on launch...............ya i was impressed...........

i think i was putting down like 425 hp to get those runs.........

Not trying to hijack a thread, but, ddeennis, how do you get an '81 Camaro down to 3600 lbs. fighting weight with driver? I've got a '75 that weighs damn near 2 tons, according to a second gen website.

Ported Oval Edelbrocks
282 cfm at .400
305 cfm at .500
320 cfm at .650
Port matched Victor Jr. Oval
Holley 1000 Annular discharge
10.7 to 1
Custom solid roller based on the magnum line (pretty mild solid roller ramps) 255 / 262 at .050 .652 lift on a 112 lsa 110.5 Icl

I added a 3/4 wood spacer and it picked up .5 mph in the 1/8 so it is probably closer to 495 rwhp.

This is a great combo for a lighter car and limited traction, putts around town nice but does not produce real killer low end tq, get the revs up and it pulls like crazy though. I shift around 68-6900.

My only complaint is it does not like to idle below 1200 rpms, but will cruise on the freeway in 6th .62 x 3.70 at 1500 rpms. A little over 2200 rpms is 80 mph

Look at my signature line. 11's on Goodyear Eagles and I didn't even change the air pressure fron what I normally have in them.

Sallee Chevrolet, "502" crate motor with a 230I/236E hydraulic roller cam at .05 lift.

the 81 camaro was a stripped down daily driver running no carpet in it...took ALL the sound deadening material out....look under side of dash and it just a hollow shell.... i took out all the hidden weight so when some one looked inside my car it looks normal but just no carpet... i also had fiberglass hood and nothing in the engine compartment but and engine....talking bare min. stuff......supper light wheels, skinnies up front(centerlines)......no bumpers on the car the whole front clip weight in at 100 lbs minus the hood....no rear bumper just the plastic shell supported with light alum. rods to help hold it in place.....the car looked factory on the outside but i tell ya if i ever got hit there is nothing there holding it together.....lol

Sharp Car Redrum..

I really like it. I know the 502/cam swap is a proven performer. And I really hate using my LS5 block, even though I guess I can't prove its matching # since it was decked.. I just gotta see if I can do it with a new cam in this 460. Those are some tall meats on your car.. what size are those tires? I have p315/35R17s out back, but they don't look anywhere near as big as yours.

Matt,

Redrums car has 295/45/18s, same as on my GTO. Thanks Redrum. I do believe that your the first guy to use that tire on an A body. My GTO is 4200 pounds with me in it. My best run on Nitto 555 street radials was a 12.51@116 mph. The 60 foot time was around 2.1-2.2

Not quite 11's but I have managed 12.26 @ 112, with 1.93 ft time using 255/70/15 BFGoodrich radial TA's. My best 60 ft has been 1.84 (last night!!) with these tires but I usually average 1.90 - 1.95 short times.

My goal is to hit 11.99 using these tires and full exhaust by the end of the season
