: Cowl induction kit
Raupleminze454 Jan 10th, 08, 2:02 PM Hey guys,
I just received the cowl induction air cleaner kit from ss396.com and was just wondering what the flange is for and what does it attach to. My car is originally a non cowl flap car but I am converting.
Thanks in advance,
Brian
70ChevelleRagtop Jan 10th, 08, 2:13 PM Not sure what you mean by flange. Are you talking about the silver colored air cleaner spacer that goes between the carb and the bottom of the air cleaner?
The only other thing that I can think of that looks remotely like a flange is a valve (typically one side is gold and the other is black) that goes in line on the manifold vacume hose and the actuator pod on the bottom of the flapper. The valve serves two purposes. It is a one way check valve and also levels out the drastic changes in engine vacum so the door doesn't slam open and closed as manifold vacum fluctuates.
If it isn't one of these, post more info and we'll see if we can answer your questions.
Xtreme70SS396 Jan 10th, 08, 2:26 PM Not sure what you mean either, but I have one other possible thought in addition to Dana's comments above.
If it looks like a circle, with a flat top (or bottom if upside-down ;)), it's the piece that sits inside the air cleaner housing. The rubber seal goes on the top "flange" part, and seals against the hood when the hood closes.
70ChevelleRagtop Jan 10th, 08, 2:30 PM I thought about this some more and wondered if you're talking about the flat steel ring that goes on the top of the air cleaner (looks like a big flat donut with a partially flat edge in one spot). The rubber seal that goes between the Cowl Induction hood and the air cleaner goes on the outside edge of this ring effectively sealing the carburator intake off from pulling hot air in from under the hood.
See pic below for what Mark and I are talking about.

Raupleminze454 Jan 10th, 08, 4:20 PM Here is the kit I ordered, the piece i am refering to is the black metal ring that is in the lower right side of the pic. I am wondering how this piece gets attached to the air cleaner and how the gasket gets attached to the metal ring (where I assume is goes). Any info, pics, advice or a step in the right direction is appreciated.

sparky1698 Jan 10th, 08, 4:41 PM The seal goes on the flange then the flange goes on the air cleaner. On the back of the air cleaner it has a indentation that matches up with one on the flange(at least it does on mine) and you just push it together. The seal that goes on the flange is one of those things you have to play around with. I did see recently another thread on here about the seals. I hope this helps, I'm not always good at typing what I'm thinking :D
Raupleminze454 Jan 10th, 08, 5:59 PM Ok, I got the steel ring on the air cleaner base, I am assuming that the part of the ring with the bent in part snaps over the section in the base that is there to provide distributor clearence.

I am still not sure how to put the gasket on the ring, I under stand if fits around it but what side is up and does the small lip around the base of the "flange" fit into the gasket at all?
Raupleminze454 Jan 10th, 08, 10:25 PM anybody?
Xtreme70SS396 Jan 10th, 08, 11:52 PM The gasket goes around the outside edge of the flange. It can be installed either way - one way ends up being "shorter", or the gasket does not sit up as high as the other way.
Depending on your intake manifold (stock has less clearance), you may need to flip it for hood clearance.
DZAUTO Jan 11th, 08, 12:03 AM Even though my 70 has a SB400, here is how it all goes together.
The flat area in the flange (metal ring) faces toward the right (for air cond clearance).
I've pulled up the rubber seal from the front so that you can see how it fits.
The rubber seal fits against the round duct on the underside of the Cowl Induction hood. The plain domed hoods DO NOT have this duct.
Oh ya, there are no stripes on my CI hood because stripes are against my religion.

Raupleminze454 Jan 11th, 08, 1:52 AM DZAUTO that was very awesome of you to take the time to do that, thank you very much I appreciate it. I am a perfectionist and want the car to be just right.
Thanks again,
Brian

JimboChevelle Nov 25th, 09, 1:28 AM Does anyone know where I can get this part? Here's a pic to help.

Jim Mac Nov 25th, 09, 1:46 AM I dont know if its got to be 100% correct, but its just a shoulder bolt. ace hardware if your or mcmaster carr can probably get it for you. jim
DZAUTO Nov 25th, 09, 10:26 AM It's been a while since I bought any CI hood parts, but at one time, MOST of the Chevelle vendors sold every single piece for the CI hood system.
72ragtop Nov 25th, 09, 11:34 AM If you can't find it, just slip a piece of tubing or a spacer over a bolt. It's not critical. Jim.

My answer in the other thread in Restoration forum. (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2632887&postcount=15)
