I dropped my motor into my car today, started installing my new Hooker headers and then proceeded to remove the motor and reinstall it 2 more times. Not for the practice mind you, in order to "ding" the headers so to clear MM,control arm mounting flange and steering shaft. What gives? has anyone else had these problems with Hookers? They are "comp" not supers but still they're not cheap

Not the motor mounts, but the brake dist.block on the inside of the frame rail, driver side,,,and lower a-arm on pass.side,,,went to Dynomax 1.75 and fit much better.

Robert,
The only reason (I'm sure)I didn't hit the brake block was cause it aint there anymore ;) !!!!
One other thing...if you have a 7qt pan w/kickouts(lowprofile)you will NOT get an oil filter between the pan and the tubes. unless of course they're loose (or your Houdini)

I can get my filter out easily enough, but I'm running a stock Milidon replacement pan.

1967 El camino 454 Milodon kicked out pan. No problems with the comps. Oil filter is easy to change also. I did grind down the brake prop. bracket a little. I have seen people have problems with my year as well. They did not have the big block mounts. They had small block.

Brett,
How does the motor mount affect the clearance between the pan and the tube???(real question, not sarcasm)
Anyone mount them to alum heads? my flanges needed grinding, the head bolts (ARP) w/washers interfered.

On my '65's 496 I used Hooker #2455, the cheapie $160 model. To me they fit like a dream - I only had to clearance the #5 tube for the steering shaft which was totally expected because of the raised port Brodix heads. With standard heads NO clearancing would have been needed. A test fit revealed that they pointed down at the collector, so I used a floor jack at the collector to bend them upwards to my liking. AFTER clearancing the # 5 tube I had them ceramic chromed and they look great.

The only tip I can pass along for BB header installs is that it is often worthwhile to remove the steering shaft (I did) to create more workable room. The passenger side dropped in from above, the driver's side from below. Yes of course I unbolted the engine and trans mounts and hoisted the engine/trans up untill the top of the trans was against the underside of the trans tunnell.

just finished installing "Flow Tech" 1.75" heads on my 72 454 and they fit like a glove. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

They fit better than the ones that were on (brand unknown). Only thing I have to do is get it to the muffler shop for new pipes back to the muffler.

I also have done a 70 with Hooker Comp headers.
Installed them on a Ramjet 502.
I had to clearance for the passenger upper control arm mount also, and for the #8 spark plug access also. It was a pain, but the drivers side required no clearancing at all, even with all stock brake parts present, power steering, everything. This is an A/C car also, and other than spark plug access on passenger side, doesn't seem to present any problems with clearance.
