: Suspension Advice
Camaro_fever68 Jan 9th, 08, 6:27 PM 69 Chevelle
I have KYB gas adjust shocks front and rear on my Chevelle. I've also got rear air bags. I need more traction. I'm going to change the front shocks to some ajustable drag shocks. Should I change the rear also even though I have the air bags? I've seen somewhere that the rear should be fine but can't find it now to make sure.
The rest of the suspension is new stock springs all around and UMI weld in relocation bracket, stock upper arms, boxed lower arms.
Thanks
Ray
Bob West Jan 9th, 08, 8:58 PM What stock springs do you have up front? They might be too stiff and wont allow the weight transfer you need. I like the KONI street adjustables or classics up front, they seem to be working so far ;)
Camaro_fever68 Jan 9th, 08, 9:44 PM The front springs are Moog 6332. They are for the 6cyl car.
Are the KONI street adjustables a 90/10 shock?
RB69SS396Conv Jan 9th, 08, 9:51 PM What does the car do wrong? Spin, hop, bog, or ????
Camaro_fever68 Jan 9th, 08, 10:08 PM I'm running M/T Street Radials. It has a spinning problem.
Bob West Jan 9th, 08, 11:12 PM The KONI street adjustables are not a 90/10, a bit stiffer on extension even set on full soft. I think they control the rise better than a 90/10, too quick on extension and the rear will unload. I didnt need them until the 60fts started dropping and it started running in the 10's, I had a problem with the front jumping up too quick and unloading the rear. I'm sure a good double adjustable could do more, but I dont need them up front, now on the rear they might help me some more.
Dave427 Jan 9th, 08, 11:24 PM Put some good tires on it, my Chevelle only does 1.74 60 ft. with MT DR's and spins all the way through first and second. With my Hoosier Quick Time Pro's it went 1.63 ft. almost a dead hook.

Camaro_fever68 Jan 10th, 08, 12:09 AM That's a pretty good hook Dave.
Should I change out the KYB's on the front to an adjustable 90/10 80/20 60/40 shock or leave them?
Dave427 Jan 10th, 08, 12:15 AM I would leave the KYB's in the there. I have 90/10's in the front of mine , I find my front end doesn't ever come down til I let off at the end of the quarter mile. The best thing I installed was the Moroso Trick Rear springs they made the car squat. I am running 6 cylinder Moog coils in the front.

You dont want the car to squat, you want a bit of seperation, seperation means its planting the rear tire, squatting means you have work to do, but it probably wont hurt a lower power car. With the KYB's the front cant come up fast enough so the rear squats. Just my humble opinion ;)

I got the air bag and lower CA brackets to help control the squat. I'm also running 6cyl springs in the front. My front end does seem to come up too slow with the KYB's. I think I will try some cheap 90/10's and see what happens. After 20 something pgs of searching it seems like the thing to do.
Camaro_fever68 Feb 18th, 08, 12:11 AM I got some el'cheapo Competition Engineering 3-way shocks and put on the front. I did the best I could to follow directions for setting them at the 90/10 position since I couldn't tell the difference between the settings.
They made a 100% difference on my car. With 11 psi in the passenger air bag and 16 psi in the E.T. radials I can pull the front tire on the street. Now I can maybe come off the line at the track with the nitrous.
