I have a 396 engine with a points distributor.
Will a mini starter wire right up with no hassle?

It will if the solenoid has two small posts...one for the purple, one for the yellow wire.
The yellow is needed in a points distributor application...bypasses the resistor wire at cranking.

And IF the new starter doesn't have the second small post for the bypass wire, you can ad a diode from the one post it does have, connecting it to the yellow wire.
