: Points disributor
Bunz-T Jan 9th, 08, 7:42 AM Been discussed before but looking for updates. Looking for a source to set up my points distributor. Have had no luck looking to buy one so I am going to rework the one I have out of a 69 SB. Going in a 69 BB with a little more than a stock build.
rocks66ss Jan 9th, 08, 9:06 AM If your looking for someone to rebuild it, I suggest Jerry MacNeish, check out his web site under restoration services.Camaro Hi-Performance: Welcome (http://www.z28camaro.com/)
One of his specialitys is distributor rebuilds for points setups.

Chevy fan attic Jan 9th, 08, 11:24 AM If you are not going to spin the motor to high I would suggest an HEI.
Robinls5 Jan 9th, 08, 11:36 AM What I did in my 70. In my stock 70 Dist I installed a Electronic " Perlux ". A Perlux system replaces the points, no holes to add will not harm a stock dist. The Perlux system will not brake up untill around 7-9000 R.P.M.s LOL. Installed it 6-7 years ago AND I have not had the cap off.
You will use---Stock Dist,Stock Cap,Stock Wires. Looking at the car it appears you have " Points ". My car is a show car, And no one has ever noticed the Perlux. It all is under the stock Dist. cap. I am happy and will never go back to points!! My 2 cents.

Either that or a Crane XR-1 conversion which does the same thing.
I have been considering either for my car. I have an HEI but sometimes I go thru this phase where I want the stock look as far as the distributor goes.
Bunz-T Jan 9th, 08, 12:21 PM I talked to a rebuilder who will:
1. Furnish the distributor completely rebuilt
2. Install a Petronix pointless system
3. Furnish a Petronix black flamethrower coil
4. Use a brass terminal cap.
For $208 + Freight
Is this good, bad, or about right. It will be going in a 69 I am building with a just above stock 396.

For $208 you could just about have a real distributor, new--or--a used-but-good HEI and fifty or a hundred bucks still in your pocket.
OLDED Jan 9th, 08, 12:44 PM $208 isn't that bad considering the Pertronix is about $90 - $100 with shipping from a catalog, plus the time to clean it, set clearances and assemble. If you are a bit handy tho you can do this yourself. However you may want him to set the max. advance to work correctly with an aftermarket cam too. Initial timing at 16-18 and 18 -20 in the mechanical advance. OLDED
COPO Jan 9th, 08, 12:47 PM Crane is what I'm going to go with since it has a rev limiter setting http://www.cranecams.com/?show=browseParts&lvl=5&prt=1973&action=partSpec&partNumber=750-1710 since my Pertronix burnt out after about 8 yrs. The symptoms were like a carb that's not set up.
Bunz-T Jan 9th, 08, 12:58 PM I can put a calf in a squeeze chute, pull its nut sack down with a pair of pliers, slice the end off with a sharp knife and pull his balls off of him with little or no blood providing the signs are right. But a lot of this stuff I have to depend on others.
If there are better options of a place to buy a completed unit please advise. If you know of someone needing the above done send them to me!

Bunz-T Jan 9th, 08, 3:49 PM Rocky I talked to Jerry who certified a 69 Z for me several years ago. $165 to rebuild mine. Now I have to decide if I want to stay with points or use the built one with the electronic conversion for $160.
Thanx for the help.
glennslanaker Jan 9th, 08, 4:07 PM why do a points distributor??? the only reason i can think of would be originality, if you aren't going for that, get yourself an HEI and don't hassle with replacing points every 6000 miles.
i installed a pertronix kit in a '70 corvette because it has a mechically driven tach on the distributor and if i went HEI my tach wouldn't work. you don't have to be very handy at all to put one in, if you can change oil you could do it.
for a cheap HEI, go to any 'pull it yourself' junkyard. last one i paid about $20 for, installed in my 442, worked like a charm for the last 5 years.
Bunz-T Jan 9th, 08, 4:43 PM I crossed the line on this car when I decided not to build the 454 pull out motor that came with it and bought a correct built 396 with the dates awfully close. I like the look of an original motor and you would have to like it to work your way thru some of this one of stuff on a 69. Being a SS,4 speed, A/C missing only the motor is deserving of this attention.
davewho1 Jan 9th, 08, 4:59 PM This guy's been mentioned on this forum many times; supposed to be an excellent setup:

rocks66ss Jan 9th, 08, 5:06 PM I run points in my car. It's one of those things I like to tinker with.

Bob Soucy Performance Automotive Ignition

Been working on Distributors for 40+ years. Was a regular at all our Texas swap meets for a long time.
rcrchsr16 Jan 9th, 08, 10:01 PM I also bought a Crane XR-1 and am very happy with it- for $65. All you have to do is make sure the coil is compatible from an ohm/resistance standpoint. The instructions are good in setting it up and I called for clarification and got an answer right away. It doesn't take the perverbial rocket scientist to do this. I like the rev limiter feature as well.
Belair Jan 9th, 08, 11:17 PM I believe Perlux is the old name for Pertronix. Hey, rebuilding with Pertronix is no harder than cuttin' a calf, plus you won't get your teeth kicked in.

70ChevelleRagtop Jan 10th, 08, 2:45 PM Wow, a built in rev-limiter. I'm going to have to check out that XR-i. That is pretty slick.
