: 1969 Core support survey
In regards to 1969 Chevelles. Which cars came with the core support with the smaller radiator opening?
I'm thinking that the smaller opening type core supports are only found on 6 cyl cars. (250 cu. in.) ......and........Possibly on 307, non air cond cars??
Anyone here have an original 307 non air car? Can you look at your core support and see if it has the small opening or the larger opening.
Chevl_Steve Jan 9th, 08, 7:58 AM I have an original 307 non-air car and the radiator opening is huge. I'm pretty sure it's original.
I put a 396 in it, and aftermarket air. I am happy with the size of the opening as cooling this monster with A/C is VERY important to me. I bought a new radiator from a truck/van recommended by a local radiator shop, found a shroud that fits with minor modification that barely fits my 18" steel fan with clutch.
Need pics? I'm still at the paint stage, but had the core support powder coated a while back.

1badss396 Jan 9th, 08, 9:54 AM Nate, I have seen quite a few original 307 non air cars and they all had the big opening for the core support.
fastss396man Jan 9th, 08, 3:31 PM I've only seen the smaller opening in 6 cyl cars. If you have access to or already have a core support with the smaller opening and need the bigger opening you should be able to cut out the extra sheet metal and have the bigger opening. I've looked at these core supports before and I don't recall any differences other than the cut out.
vrooom3440 Jan 9th, 08, 5:10 PM There are also differences in the nuts welded on the top depending on what radiator would be used, either 3 nuts or 4 nuts in the alternate locations.

Mr69 Jan 10th, 08, 2:29 AM Good info guys.
real good.
This is getting interesting.............
I'm taking in a firewall forward restoration on a 69 Thursday.
I'll get a look at the core support and post the results.
It's a local car and I've known the car and owner for some 15 years.
There were a few non-air cars with the VO1 HD cooling option which would have the big AC/BB size radiator and large opening. 8,588 to be exact.
Tom's 68 Jan 10th, 08, 8:00 AM had an el-camino with a 350 and no air with a small opening, also had a six with air that had a large opening. also had a four door with no air and a 307 with a large opening.
