I currently have a stock 1970 396 that I would like to rebuild but leave with a stock outward appearance. Has anyone out there done a build up and left it looking stock on the outside? Any web sites or information on what you did would be greatly appreciated. I have a turbo 400 with a 331 rear gearing with posi. It is in a 1970 El Camino SS with factory air.

You could get an aluminum intake and paint it orange,,,good hydraulic cam,,,kinda hard to hide headers though and a big block needs headers.

As you'll be buying new pistons for your rebuild, here's a set to consider:

Now, you'll need a crankshaft:

I wasn't shopping price, just showing what you can do. Port cleanup, a little bowl work and bigger valves will go a long way. A hydraulic cam with 224-230 intake will not make it too nasty @ idle, particularly if you can find one ground with 112-114 LSA.
