: UD Harold Cam Recommendation

I have been reading on this board for about a year now and have come to the conclusion that Mr. Brookshire offers the best cams in the business. So here's what I have:
SBC 406
Dart Iron Eagles 215 runner/ 72 cc chamber
~10-1 compression
5.56 rods
2500 stall
1980 Z28 camaro
3.42 gears
245/45/17

I am looking for a solid cam that will keep my DCR around 8.2-1. This is my daily driver. If there is anything I am leaving out, let me know.

Thank You
MaTt

He may want to know your gear ratio and tire size.

Mz28att,

Your engine could run a bigger cam than this, but looking at your converter and rear gear, I'd stay with a Lunati 401A6LUN, our 276/284 at .020, 243/251 at .050, .518/.530 valve lift(Put a 1.6 rocker on the intake for .551 valve lift), and 110 LSA. The cam is ground 4° advanced, and I would leave it there, for a better DCR.
BTW, thanks for the kind words.....

Thanx for replying. Will that cam give me the Ultradyne sound that everyone speaks so highly of?

Matt, not second guessing the wizard here, and this is defintely vernier tuning, but if you have good quench, you might even schooch that cam to +6/7. My calculated DCR is 8.6:1 with that grind on a 104-103 intake centerline.

If you're looking for something that sounds like the drum intro in " I'm hot for teacher " dats it. And it makes great power, just like the book said. smile.gif

In Harolds previous post, he said the cam is ground 4* advanced and he would leave it there. Does that mean, when I Install it, to leave it DOT-TO-DOT, on my timing set?

I wouldn't run 8.6 DCR with that cam.
Actually I couldn't, I'm at 8.4 - 8.5 now with some detonation issues.

As far as dot to dot. Yes, most sets will give you the 4* advance that way. You should degree the cam though. Saves a lot of "Gee, I don't know" if you run into problems with the tune. Since Harolds cams are custom ground, it should be less likely that you'll have a problem. Unlike shelf cams from some other companies. :(

Hope you get a good deal on tires. :D

UD Harold,

Would this spring work with that cam? I have almost the same setup Z28 has, and I am considering the same cam you recommended him...

1.850" - 105 lbs
1.800" - 120 lbs
1.750" - 135 lbs
1.500" - 235 lbs
1.250" - 335 lbs
1.125" - 440 lbs
Coilbind - 1.150"

Thank you!

Thank you! Not answering for Harold but they look pretty good to me if you set them at 1.750" - 1.780" ;)

Yeah, I'm hoping it will work out with that spring. I'm picking it because it actually fits in a stock pocket at 1.250" diameter
