: Stripes
team5150 Jan 7th, 08, 9:12 PM I was at the painters over the weekend and I am getting ready to have him put the stripes on my (new to me) 70 . I was just automatically thinking and talking black stripes because that's what I had on my 71. The painter asked me why not do white stripes on this car instead of the black. I hadn't really thought about it because I have a black interior and just thought black stripes go with that.
I started looking at photos on eBay and some of the other car for sale places and I saw a number of red Chevelles with white stripes and black interiors.
I have to admit at first I wasn't too sold on the white, but now that I have seen a few it is looking better and better all the time because there aren't nearly as many with white as there are with black.
My car has a domed hood and is as nasty as it sounds - so it's no poser. (The white letter tires are coming off with BSW & Crager SS wheels are going on) Does this fit with the white stripe look ?
I know, I know - it's my car do what I want but I am really interested in some opinions on this.
Thanks !
Tom

Choices
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e345/team5150/Choices.jpg
Bunz-T Jan 7th, 08, 9:30 PM I am building a 69 that will be red/black as yours is. With this combo black should be your only choice. Here is why I think so. The black stripes will draw upon everything black on the car . The grill, interior, etc. White has nothing to accent and tends to soften rather than highlight in this combo.
furball8994 Jan 7th, 08, 9:36 PM When I paint my 69 (code 52 Garnet red, Black int.) I will be going with a white SS side strip. (factory is black) IMO white makes the red look brighter
frankf72malibu Jan 7th, 08, 9:38 PM When I paint my 69 (code 52 Garnet red, Black int.) I will be going with a white SS side strip. (factory is black) IMO white makes the red look brighter
I agree - the white does make the red look brighter. Go for white.

team5150 Jan 7th, 08, 10:12 PM A guy at work said that white is for a girls car and black is for guys.
White = good
black = bad
harrod Jan 7th, 08, 10:15 PM White
1970misty_turquoise_elky Jan 7th, 08, 10:18 PM Black makes them look more mean. White looks gay to me. At least on a red car.
BillsCamino Jan 7th, 08, 10:21 PM Slightly biased opinion here.... BLACK !!
team5150 Jan 7th, 08, 11:08 PM Bill, are you getting help for that stuttering problem ??
Belair Jan 7th, 08, 11:47 PM They are all either white or black. Dare to be different............Grey!!!!
bookmaker19 Jan 8th, 08, 12:12 AM If white stripes is for girls and I was looking to fill mr car with tail-than white it is!!! but since I am married (today) black with black interior is a no brainer.:yes::yes:
Dave427 Jan 8th, 08, 12:44 AM When my car was red with the SS stripes, I painted the stripes candy brandy wine. They looked black at one angle or on a cloudy day. But when the sun hot them right they were like a burgandy wine color.

shadowgray396 Jan 8th, 08, 1:04 AM I like the look of the car without the stripes, especially with that hood. I'm not sure that stripes would make it look better. I like the stripes on chevelles, but your car look great without them. If you want stripes then black.
Alwhite00 Jan 8th, 08, 6:27 AM Match the interior.

:D
I guess it was a glitch with either the website or my provider.
dreis454 Jan 8th, 08, 7:17 AM Black with black interior
white only looks right with white int.
whats the specs on the rest of the car?
Twins Fan Jan 8th, 08, 10:49 AM I like the look of the car without the stripes, especially with that hood.
x2, dare to be different and leave it all red. If you need to have the stripes, I vote black.
ToocoolZ28 Jan 8th, 08, 2:00 PM check mine.
mac762 Jan 8th, 08, 2:30 PM I'd leave it all red. If you have to have stripes go with white. Too many black on red as it is. Don't flame me, I love the look but you have to admit it's probably the most popular combo.
My ex had a 71 that was green. She bought a cowl hood from someone that had wrecked his car. $100, (1990), we drove down to pick it up with her hood removed. Bolted it on for the ride home and from the inside it was like a complete color change. :) Red with white stripes.
JHP69ss Jan 8th, 08, 2:50 PM check mine.
 nice...white w/ white interior...
thunderstruck507 Jan 8th, 08, 4:53 PM on that color red, black looks good and white looks terrible
either black or none IMO
Chevl_Steve Jan 8th, 08, 5:23 PM I agree with "dare to be different!" I have a cowl induction hood as well. I have my own design, but the whole cowl induction section down to the front of the hood is ultra-white with heavy pearl on top. There are stripes on the flat part of the hood, just after the hood drops from the cowl rise. This does 3 things (maybe more):
#1. Is different from everyone else
#2. Adds some "bling" when the pearl shines in the sun
#3. Emphasizes the cowl induction part of the hood
If that doesn't get your car some looks, stands out from the crowd, and get the magazine and TV show guy's attention, then they are blind. Not that I care about that, because for the most part, it won't likely impress any judges at most car shows ....although I could be wrong?

team5150 Jan 8th, 08, 9:20 PM Steve,
Do you have any pix of your hood ? I was thinking if I do the white I would do a pearl coat to really bring it out in the sun.
It's funny, this is a subject that people INSTANTLY say black or white - no one hesitates. They either like the white or black. No talking them out of it.
As far as leaving it all red - there is just too much red. It needs to be broken up and I think the stripes will bring out the cowl hood much more.
I have no problem with daring to be different ! Here is photo of my 39 Ford (chevy powered:D). You can't see it in a photo but we shot it last year with "spectrum crystals".
These are flakes that, unlike metalfake, each crystal reflects the complete spectrum of color when the sun shines on them. We didn't want it to look like a bass boat so there are only maybe a dozen in a 6" square area. They are invisible to the eye.
The reaction from people is very interesting. They bob & weave to see the different crystals reflect in the paint, but in the shade or no sunlight it's just screaming YELLOW.

72convertibless454 Jan 8th, 08, 10:03 PM I like the black stripes - but then again - look at my car - red car, black stripes, black interior, white top...... crazy.....:noway:
some day I am going back to original - gulf green, white stripes, white interior, white top.:D
Chevl_Steve Jan 9th, 08, 12:24 AM Tom, nice street rod! Hanging out with street rodders is what got me into restoring my Chevelle. It's obvious you have a lot of time and money into it.
I am still in the middle of painting mine. The white pearl I just covered up, as my wife modified my design .... no comments please. However, this is a picture of it before working to modify the design. No clear coat yet and the light may not be enough to show off any of the pearl.
