I can get a 5 speed out of an 89 camaro are these trannys any good?

Not unless you plan on using it behind a stock 305 or 350 and dont beat on it. They are not rated for anything over 300hp or 300ftlbs torque. Not worth the hassel in my opinion.

my friend is going to put one in his c10. he has the gm 290 horse 350 and its just a cruiser. Should be alot better than the 3 speed he has now.

they can take abuse, but nowhere near as much as a muncie, IMO. I have had one 5spd Iroc that I did a 350 swap into, it ran 13.40's on d/r's with no troubles. Kid down the street has one in his V8 S10 with a 355 and nitrous running 12.0's.

they arent too bad and are a nice alternative for a stickshift overdrive
