: Intake/carb combo for a 283

I just bought a '64 Malibu SS convertible. It's been entirely redone. The engine was rebuilt. It has an old-style Edelbrock Torker single-plane intake and Edelbrock 750 carb. The car clearly does not have the heads and cam to support this combo. It's running stock heads and what sounds like a very mild cam. Anybody have a good suggestion for an intake/carb combo (and cam possibly) to really wake up a 283 without pulling the heads or other work? The car has headers and a 4-speed.

Thanks,

Brian

The good old Performer intake would be my choice. If you intend to rev it a bit the RPM would work too, but IMO would kill a little low end in a mild 283.

We used a stock early 4-bbl GM manifold and a 500cfm Edelbrock on our 283, great throttle response and midrange. With a 204°/214° generic RV cam the engine pulled well up to 6000 rpm, yet had decent low end torque.

600cfm edelbrock and a Performer series manifold of your choice....... you could also look at a 600cfm/RPM Air Gap/Duntov solid combo if you want it a little "racier" graemlins/thumbsup.gif ...just make sure you have the compression to support it. i know in '67, the cr was 9.5:1, not sure if it's the same in the '64s. good luck. 283's a great little motor

I'd suggest a ZZ4 intake, a Holley 6210, and a solid cam with about 215/225° and as close to .500" as conveniently possible. 3.73 gears.
