Eddy, "street" is a concept that varies among individuals. What is street for one person, is too radical for another.

Chevy High Performance just did a makeover on a 572 crate engine, and put a much, much smaller cam in it., the 454Ho hyd roller. Still had tons of torque ( but lost 100 hp) and now it came in much earlier , nearly flat from 2500 up.

Personally feel that something as big as a Lunati 288/296 hyd, which many here use as a thumper in a 496, would be a nice mellow street cam for a 540. The 302A8 here... http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLine/Products/IEC/IECC/Chevy7.html

If you are asking how much cam you can get away with for the street, I think you probably want to keep a 112 LSA to smooth out the power band, and could use 255/260/265@ .050 and still have a decent idle. Cam like that would only take a 540 up to 5800 or so. The "street" cams like the 454HO or the much better Lun302A8 would be 5000 rpm cams.

Do you want this to idle like a Benz, or are you wondering how much you can get away with?

There are a lot of cams that will work.
Which one is best depends on what you want.
DAILY DRIVERS:
502A4LUN--287/295--256/264--.660/.660--110 LSA
502A9LUN--300/306--264/270--.670/.670--110 LSA
The 502A9 has made 705 BHP on a very reliable dyno, in a 10.5 CR 534.
I have another cam, 295/303--264/272--.660/.660 that has made about 750 BHP in a 10:1 572. All the .630,.660,.670 lift cams are true daily drivers, the .630 and the .670 families both having gone over 2000 miles in 24 hours in SBCs.
We also have more aggressive cams.

EDDY merlin,

Of course......
PHR a number of years ago had a cover feature of a man who drove 250 miles round trip to race his 287/295R10, in a 502. I have used it as a daily driver for over 15 years.
The 300/306R10 went over 300 continous hours at Mercury Marine in the 1980s. It is easier on the valve train than the 287/295R10.....
Getting either of these cams on a 112 LSA instead of a 110 LSA makes them idle smoother, and gives a little more on the bottom. I would use a 3000 SS converter with either one, but the 287/295R could get by with 3.7-3.9 gears, the 300/306R with 3.9-4.1 gears, particularly on 112 LSA.
Both cams will need a good fuel system.
