: If you had a choice?
driver Jan 4th, 08, 8:38 PM I'm getting into doing some powder coating which is more of a pass time than anything but if you had a choice of color for your intake what color would you choose? This is powder coating not paint.. A few I've been thinking of is
CHEVY ORANGE
WRINKLE BLACK
CHROME
BLACK CHROME
SILVER
GRAY, but the color choices are endless..
Thanks,Bill
red rat Jan 4th, 08, 8:48 PM Chevy orange
Jimmy P Jan 4th, 08, 10:03 PM If you powder coat the intake orange, it won't match the rest of the engine.........If that's going to be orange too.....
Chrome is probably the better choice, but it depends on what the manifold is, and what the finished engine is supposed to look like. (stock, hot rod, etc.)
If you're going all custom, a buddy of mine just did some smoke chrome, like a titanium, darker than chrome. All of the harware would look really good and very different in the smoke chrome, if you painted everything else black, or orange.
twotone64 Jan 4th, 08, 10:04 PM I used the chrome powder coat, it looks like silver paint, not the best but I liked it. I haven't tried the black wrinkle yet, but there are some nice colors. The Chevy Orange is a good choice, I used it on my valve covers, and it works well. I used "Chassis Black" on all my brackets and it is a good choice for that. make sure it is all very very clean, I use brake cleaner even after abrasive blasting to make sure all petroleum contaminants are removed.

I just saw black krinkle yesterday, it looks great! If you like that type of finish.

I think the black chrome is pretty close to the smoke chrome? I agree with you for sure, it's got to match the other engine part's to look correct. Most engines you see any more are black.

I use the eastwood pre cleaner many many times before the final finish and it seems to work pretty good.. I wear rubber gloves to keep finger prints off the part.

Thanks JWA!!
ktrim Jan 5th, 08, 11:15 AM Ive seen several done at painterslane, The chrome never really looked right to me. It had to have a clear on it that gave it a yellow tint. I like the black chrome (my carb was done with that). Eastwood also seels an aluminium colored powder (ithink its eastwood). that looks alot like the endurashine finish on edelbrock manifolds. On a side note, A few of the ricer guys that came in would also powdercoat the inside of the manifold, claimed it was a cheap way to smoth it out...

The Chevy orange I bought was off of E-bay and it matched exactly with the engine paint that Kragen/Checker/Schucks sells. I did the heads, and valve covers with the powder coat, and the block with paint, as my oven is not big enough for the block. All three were a dead on match to eachother wether they were painted or powder coated.
driver Jan 5th, 08, 1:04 PM Eastwood sells a single stage chrome which needs no clear which won't cause the yellow effect. It will hold up to anything. I'm not doing any of this for my car. I'm doing it because I really like it and to sell the items after they are finished. The key is the prep-work just like painting a car. It gets boring around here in the winter so this should keep me busy untill the sun shines again.
