I have my battery in the trunk and am using 4 guage stereo cable to charge my battery it goes form the back of the alt all the way to the battery in the trunk. I am using a huge ANL type fuse holder and an 150 amp fuse, and am wondering if I should mount it in the front near the alt or in the back near the battery? I thought i recalled that fuses should go closest to the battery?

A short in the middle will pop the fuse at the battery and fry the alt and or the cable.
Might want a 10 or 12 gauge fusible link at the alt too.

how about one at the alternator and one at the batt.

hmmmm....

don't have a fuse on mine...never thought about that...I should probably put on in there though...is 150Amps sufficent? Where do you get one that big?

I have a circuit breaker out of a forklift in mine back at the battery. 150 amps and is resetable. Fuseable link on the Alternator.

I am using a 150 amp because my alt. is 140 amps. it is probably way overkill but so what! i think i will mount it near the battery for now.

Do you guys fuse the battery to starter wire? Isn't that like a 200amp draw?!

no, i use a ford starter solenoid so the long legnth of wire isn't live unless cranking. The wire going to the trunk from the alt is always live

Cody, Can't you just connect the alt wire to the battery side of the Ford solenoid and avoid running wire all the way back to the trunk? You could still mount a fuse near the solenoid if you wanted to.

the ford solenoid is in the trunk

Well, that would explain why you want to run the wire all the way to the trunk. Just out of curiousity, why did you mount the solenoid in the trunk?

so the cable going from the battery to starter isn't always energized. It only has power when you are cranking.
