I have a Rochester Q-jet that I'm having problem on top of my 454. The markings on the casing are :
17082403
1734
Anybody able to decode this as to what it is ?
I have problem getting this to open up, rpm's, under load. Was wondering if this is the wrong carb for this bbc!
Thanks

From what I can tell, it looks like it was made in the 80's and came off a Buick. Doesn't sound like the type of qjet you need for a big block. You probably want something from the 60's or 70's. What is it on? This is where I got the decode info from.

Thanks Savage its a 82 engine from what I knew. I was wondering if it may be a 650 rather than a 750 and it was my limitation

Its a Marine carb. Not sure how they are calibrated for a street car.

most q-jets were approx 750cfm at a minimum and a few were approx 800cfm on big pontiac/olds/caddy motors but chevy didnt seem to ever use the larger q-jets on their larger motors.
The secondary lock out that keeps them from opening up when motor is cold could be stuck holding them closed.
You could also simply not have enough throttle throw/meaning lenght of pull/linkage travel when you floor it not being enough to open the secondaries.
Along with the 2 things mentioned above the upper secondary air valve spring could also be adj too tight limiting secondary opening/power.
I have been working with q-jets for over 36 yrs and i have found over have of them have at least 1 if not 2 of the above issues either limiting or completly stopping the secondaries from opening at all.
Search quadrajet on the net and you will quickly find articles with photos showing you where the sec lock out is and also how to adj the upper sec air valve spring to have lighter opening tension too.
The q-jet is a good street carb when adj correctly so if its running well other then secondaries not kicking in dont trash the carb, just take the time to get the above mentioned items check out and squared away and you shouldbe good to go.

if that carb was originally on a small engine it may have the Secondary throttle and Air Valve limited, not opening all the way check that the throttle and air valve open to a vertical position.

You can cut to the facts if you will buy the book on Rochester carburetors by Cliff Ruggles. It is available online and Cliff is easy to talk to if you call him.
If you read the book, you can save a lot of time posting and fix your problem.:D
