If you are going to college in the Fall or have kids going to college in the fall it is time to fill out you Federal Financial aid.

Now is the time to fill out your financial aid forms. Go to fasfa.ed.gov and fill them out. Even if you think you are not eligible for aid, do it anyways.

I had forgot to do it yesterday, so I did it today.

HA, In 1988 I made $5000. When, I applied for financial aid I was told you make to much to qualify for the pell grant. So I took out every loan possible and eeked out frugal existence. Payed $150/mo rent living with people I'd rather not live with. No health ins., no car ins., paid rent with credit cards, kited the cards bills. Next year I showed an annual income of $500 and was told that I don't qualify for the full amount cause I must be getting financial support from somewhere.

yeah those folks are wierd.

It's impossible to get any assistance before age 24 because they think you are still living with your parents. I was married and living 300 miles away by that time and applying for financial aid for grad school. They wanted all my parent's financial info. What a pain!

I think pell grants are just an urban legend???

I had to fund my way with loans. Never got anything otherwise, except the one scholarship I got for my freshmen year.

Pell grants are not an urban legend. The first three years of college (fall 1994-spring 1997) I got a pell grant that basically paid me $1k over tuition and books expenses for junior college. At Chico State it covered the tuition and most of the books. I don't have exact amounts as the FAFSA forms for those are no longer in my file cabinet. Mom was making under $28k/year and had joint custody of my brother and I. In 1998, mom remarried and the combined income was too high, and there went the Pell Grant.

Beginning Fall 1996, I started taking the Stafford Loans and ended up with $11k in debt upon graduating May 2000. But, I had invested most of the money. With profit, I built a motor for the Chevelle, and still had over $4k sitting in a mutual fund when I graduated. I invested the mutual fund money into my house last year, and still owe $2k on the Stafford Loans (interest rates were less than I was making in investments so no reason to pay off).

I'm sure someone will say what I did isn't right, but if the government is giving out money and not tracking where it goes then I'm going to make money off it :D

I eventually got one, think after I was 24. Even though I moved to Az when I was 18 and supported myself . Think it was 1K in the late 80's early 90's sounds like it has never adjusted for inflation. I had to take out the max in loans for under grad in order to finnish, 25K, plus had another 10K in kited CC debt. Fortunately, I timed my party to end, I mean graduate when the last of my allowable loan was spent. :D The year I graduated good Ole, uncle SAM disallowed interest deductions other than mortgage interest.
1996 cut a 10K check to pay off the last SL, 1997 married and inherited another 5K SL, payed it off, then after all the debt was retired ole sammy reallows interest deductions for SL's.:mad::mad:

Joey is right. I can't spell after 2 years of college.:D

Gasoline fiend,
You have to do it at the start of the new year. If you did it a couple of weeks ago, it was for this Spring. Refile, they retain your info, you just change what is new.

I thought I got nothing my first year, I was wrong the state paid $26 a unit for me. I only had to pay for parking and books. If I was smarter, I would have gone to the EOPS office and got another $150 for books and half-price parking. That would have netted me another $170 total.

I invested some of my loan money, but lost some this year, most was from listening to Cramer, I still have my NYX.:(

Good advice, when my kid was in college we were told to submit on first business day of the year because schools take them first come first serve and they have enough applications to use the money by middle of January. She was successful in maxing out on grants, loans and other aid. You can estimate taxes to get in line and submit real one when you have the taxes done (as soon as you can after getting W2's, 1099's etc.) because again, completed ones will be looked at first.

I never get anything either, but I always fill it out and then look at the financial aid person funny when they start asking why I didn't put anything down for my parents info.
"I moved out of my parents house 20 years ago. Does their income still count?"

:D

No $$ for us:(... they say our family's expected contribution should be around 45k per year .... , it's funny how they only ask about your income and assets... but nothing about your expenses and debt:sad:
