Hey all, Am just trying to get some facts straight. Am talking to a guy who bought a 68ss that i believe is a fake for various reasons. Yes it does have the 138 vin. My question is did the 68 ss come with the chevelle emblem on the tail panel or trunk? If so what plants did so?

No Chevelle emblem at the rear, only on the front header panel on the left side.

If its a fake, then the VIN is fake as well...cuz 68's were the ones with a 138 VIN if it was an SS from the factory...good luck

That is what i thought. He does have it on the tail panel. Also it does not have the bigblock steering shaft. I believe the vin has been switched gonna have him check for the vin under the heater box

Don't let him know that it is stamped upside down...see if he tells you that which means he actually looked!

it is possible that if there is a "chevelle" emblem on the trunk lid that it was changed out with a later year 'A' body unit, as a result of a wreck or possibly rust.

Yes that is possable and i can believe that. But this one is in the tailpanel and there is no damage indicating that it had been changed.

Malibu's came with the Chevelle script on the passenger side of the rear panel, the panel was painted the color of the body. SS cars had the "SS 396" emblem in the center of the panel, the panel was painted semi-gloss black. Is the panel black or body color?

I see this emblem a lot on 68 SS396s. By damage do you mean the hole doesn't look drilled out? Seems to me a average body man could make the holes look smooth or "undamaged".
Let us know about the VIN. I hope it is what it's supposed to be.

I've come across a few 68 cars over the years that were real SS models but the owner, for whatever reason, simply bought and added the script to the back of the car, or added them to the fenders like a 69, painted stripes like a 70, etc. I asked one guy at a car show once why his SS had the Malibu script on the back, he had a story about it being "missing" when he bought the car so he had all this trouble to find the "correct" NOS piece, drill holes for it, install it, had some big story how the factory "forgot" to put it on his car, made it special.. etc etc... I didn't have the heart to tell him it wasn't supposed to be there in the first place.. just smiled and admired his otherwise very nice SS.. I would think if the VIN checks out on car and title as a 138 car then a strong chance it would be an SS, but who knows how or why the script got added. They are old cars, many owners, who knows.. Pretty hard to fake a VIN, much easier to add trim bits, right or wrong, some do weird stuff with their cars.

It is painted black. But the whole car has been repainted. Had partial qtrs put on at some time. But doesen't have the moulding behind the rear wheels. But they did reinstall it in front of the rear wheel  Still haven't heard from him on the vin on the firewall.

Was refering to the fact that the tailpanel doen't look like it had been replaced, with one that came with the chevelle script moulding

I would be more concerned that it did not have the big block steering shaft/knuckle.. Also real 68 SS cars have front brake lines that are routed differently than Malibu's... Most people will surely miss that one.. ;)

Well the guy is not happy, the vin on the firewall doesn't match the tag  Someone swaped the tags and title.

Pretty hard to fake a VIN.

Why would you think that?
VIN tags can be bought over the internet.
In fact, a guy was selling an original Chevelle VIN tag...out in the open...on eBay just last week.
A resourceful fellow (make that crook) can fake anything he needs to fake.
