I'm planning on installing a T-56 6 speed in my 1970 Chevelle 4 speed, big block 454. Does anyone know if the shifter will come up through the console in exactly the stock location or will it be off a few inches? If its off, about how much and in which direction?
Thanks for your help.

I don't know where the shifter is for stock 4 speed cars. I converted my auto to the T56. I have the model from 94 and up Camaros. If you are planning on using this model I can measure mine and get back to you. My car is a 65 though. Other model T56s mounted in different locations, something to keep in mind.
I can help you with other parts of the swap process if you want.

if you have any questions
I briefly considered a T-56 when picking a 4spd. The T-56 I was looking at was, I think, three inches longer, necessitating a fabbed driveshaft, but I think there is an adapter available to fit a standard shifter handle and move it forward a bit.

John,
If you are going with a T56 make sure its out of a 94 or newer F-body.The 93 T56 had less torque capacity and wider gear ratios. The 94-up models also had a better 6 gear overdrive and closer gear spread.I believe 94-up had 450 torque rating.93 T56 was 375lb for 2.73 ratio rear and 400 for 3.23 ratio.Make sure you check!

John Paul....i want to put a 5 or 6 speed in my 70 454 400TH as well...i prefer the t56 due to 2 OD gears 5&6 but the torque specs on the tremec appear to be safer...i would sure like to know anything you find out by email in case i miss it here....i havent yet contacted Forte to get info on ease of installation or prices etc of the tremec...anyone have any other input on manaul trasnny selection for a 70 454??
i know the other option is the richmond but to ger an OD gear you have to go to the 6 speed (5th = 1:1) @ $3500!!!!And besides with a torquey 454 who wants to go thru 5 gears to get to 1:1?..

John,
You will have to move the shifter hole back about 3". I just did this on my 70 Monte. I bought a new shifter hump and relocated it back and moved the console back also. I had to cut some on the transmission tunnel to get to fit also. You will need a new driveshaft and I had to lower the tranny mount about 1" also. Using a 454 engine, you will have to get a special flywheel from Centerforce and have the engine balanced.
If you want specific info, e-mail me.
