I just bought a complete '68 396 that's ready to drop in and go for my '68 project (the 454 I have will wait 'till another day). The block casting # is 3935440, and the heads are 3931063. I am assuming this is a standard 325 HP? I have no info on the block stamping. Has a Cast iron manifold and Q-jet. Does anyone have the specs on these heads (valve size, cc)?

Thanks- Rich

Your heads are 101cc closed chamber with 2:06 and 1:72 valves. Used on 325-350hp 396 and 335-390hp 427's.

Rich,

Unless someone has been into your engine, you should have 10-10.5:1 pistons in there and a tiny cam if 325 horse or the nearly as small cam if a 350 horse engine. Your engine may like a larger cam otherwise your low rpm cyl pressure may be so great as to cause pinging. Do you know if the 396 you have has a larger cam already?

The 396/350 hp cam is acutally considerabley larger then the extreemly mild/whimpy 396/325hp cam when you compair the specs.

396/325hp cam is 198/198 deg dur @.05,.398/.398 gross lift,114 or 115 LSA.

396/350hp cam is 214/218 deg dur @.05,.461/.480 gross lift,115LSA.

Thanks for the info. As far as I know, the engine is bone stock, but I'm not sure. I bought it long distance, and probably won't pick it up for a couple of weeks.

I joined back in 2004 when I first looked at this Chevelle and figured to own it shortly thereafter. The owner, however, changed his mind and decided not to sell. I kept in contact with him and finally purchased the car in September 2007, when I actually became an "active" member.
