Title says it all, I need to buy a set of headers for my 489 and am wondering if the $400 price is worth it. Hooker comps are only $150. Why the big difference? both are 2" tubes. Thanks

Super Comps have equal length primary tubes. That is the basic difference. On a street driven car with a wide operating range of rpm, this is not an issue. Tube size, collector size and length are more important. For a 489, I would "guess"; 2" primary tubes, 3" collector, 10" to 14" collector extension.
The super comps do give you a better selection of these variables for the same chassis.

No they are not worth it, no measurable difference at the strip in an 11.90 chevelle with back to back testing at a track rental..

And they will probably hang too low to make you happy.

i think they are worth it. S/C's are 2 " tubes with a 3 1/2" collector, not a 3". they fit better too. unless your car is lowered or something, i don't know why there would be any clearance issues. i had them on my 454 and was able to run 2 straight sticks of 3 1/2" pipe without modifying the stock crossmember at all, and they didn't hang down low at all, plenty of clearance on mine. my 8qt oilpan hung down lower than the headers did.

There only worth it if you need the agravation.
I tried a set after receiving them for free and my car slowed down.

Well, I have no experience with BBC Hookers, but I can tell you that my SBC Hooker Super Comps fit like a glove. I'm very pleased with the fitment. No dings, no fussing, no nothing. Now, about that ceramic coating I paid extra for....grrrrr........

They might not be worth much (if any) in E.T., but the fitment might.

Hey, I think you can order the regular Competition headers from Summit or Jeg's, test the fit and if you don't like them...you may be able to send them back. Of course you couldn't ding, scratch or damage them, but it might give you an idea.

I installed Hooker's 2 1/8" Super Comps in my '70. Very easy installation! One tube on each side actually goes around the frame.
Plenty of clearance for the kickout oilpan, long filter, and perfect ground height.
Other than some slight dinging for a couple of plugs, couldn't ask for a better fit! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I bought the painted ones, did a trial fit to make any adjustments, then had them coated locally.

I have the 2" hooker super comps on my chevelle, and they do hang really low. It scrapes going out of my driveway (albeit a fairly steep hill)

Well, I havent seen anything here to make me think S/C are worth 2.5X the money. I'm going with the comps. Thanks for the input.
