This is pretty much an overhaul since I raced the car up until June when I lost two pistons. I had twin MP70's on the car with some horible log style headers. It was also non-intercooled. I had a very sloppy B&M 8" converter that was showing 23% slippage and a TH350 that had been in the car since 1999. It still put down 740rwhp.

This is an all steel car with full interior and by full, I even run the stock bench seat so this pig is a little heavy.

So for my revised build, I had my buddy Eric at KKP build the headers for me and I'm doing the rest in my 1 car garage. I went with the S480 for some motivation, I hope this is enough. I was able to squeeze in a 4" core intercool in the core support with very minor mods. I also ditched the stock tank with a sump and put a 15 gallon cell in the trunk. I also stepped up from my Aeromotive A1000 setup to a Weldon 2025 and 13202 reg. I was also running full dual 3" exhaust, I ditched that and will be going with a single 4" now to complement the S480.

For the big upgrade, I have a 9.5" PTC on the way and a really nice glide from Alan Pope setup in an ATI Super case, 1.80 straight cut gear set, 8 clutch hub and all the other goodies. This will be my first experience with a trans brake. It's always been a foot brake car and I always left with 0lbs of boost before.

Thats cool man. No denying turbos are amazing, and keeping it all tucked under the factory hood gets mucho cool points in my book.

My buddies at the shop that built my engine threw together a TT, SBC mustang that they ran in drag week this year and placed second overall with 8.30s @ 170s on pump gas. I rode in it and its amazing how docile you can tune turbo cars. They've since taken it down to Orlando and knocked off a 7.90@186....and drive it around town!

Anyway, Can't wait to hear how your project turrns out!

freaken awesome, it's amazing what these turbo cars are capable of and remain docile enough to cruize. What's your rearend ratio?

Thanks guys.

Cruising the car around is a piece of cake, it doesn't know it can make crazy power until you roll into it, then all hell breaks loose. That in itself is the biggest advantage over running different power adders, and I have used them all on this car.

I'm running 3.50's out back. It was a good setup this year but I'm thinking about taking more out depending where the car ends up.

Here are some vids from my last June race. Most of the 60's were in the 1.7 range; it leaves pretty soft leaving with 0lbs. That should change with the new trans for 08 :hurray:

Did you build the headers or buy them?

Im looking for a set of turbo headers like that.

Mike,

I had a friend build this set for me based on a similar set I had built before. There are several places just buy them, but they start around $1450 for 304SS. This system is built from mild steel. It's not worth doing a set of stainless headers unless you buck up for the 321 series, at least for a street car. The mild steel will handle the heat cycles better. In addition, when doing mild steel, your under hood temps will be much lower with a good coating. I'm opting for the new sterling coating on this setup from Jet-Hot.

If your running stock stuff, probably not very much if you lean on it much. In 07 there was a guy running a smaller version of this turbo on a stock block and ran 5.90's @ 118 in a 79 Cutlass. It wasn't until he stepped up to this exact turbo to push it 5.65 @ 127 that he started to hurt it.

Corey, never run with a transbreak, huh.Fixin to get real interesting.Alot of guys round here leave the line at around 6lbs.so as not to overpower the track. I noticed you don't have alot of tire back there, but that is o.k. too.At the local track here, they had a guy from the NMRA run in the mid 5's on a 275/60 this past fall.1/8 th mile.

And just wondering why you want to run a single 4" exhaust when the turbo itself is an exhaust.I'd just run the down pipe under the car and forget it.

BTW,Your car lookes real nice in the videos.I'm kinda biased to it since I have a 67 also.

Wow, that was several years ago I had started on that; a good memory you have there :) Since then I have seen a lot more projects that helped push me over the edge. I super excited to get this finshed up.

I was thinking around 6-7 range myself. I don't have any confidence that the current tire will hook leaving that hard, unless shocking them will help them plant, because even when it left lazy it was tricky. I will also be putting some 28 10.5's on it that should handle leaving at 6+ no problem and that's when I expect the real fun to begin. There is a guy running the same setup leaving around 6lbs and his 60s are in the mid 1.3 range.

We do have a couple cars here on 275 that are running in the 5.60 range, so they are starting to come around. In our drag radial class here, we are limited to two choices, the 236/60 MT or the 275/50 BFG. The idea is to keep it entry level and to a 26" tall tire. I ended up doing the BFG's because the 235's just wouldn't look good. At that June race I did have the record with that 10.30 pass, then that black Nova took it away in September to set it at a 10.20 and he was on the 235's. The 10.5 slicks will be run in our True Street class where I hope to put down some pretty good times.

As for the exhaust. I would have loved to just dump the 5" portion of the down pipe under the car, but I'm not sure it would stay under 104db making a full pass, that's what we are limited to. So I stepped it down to 4" just to fit it under the car.

I did finish the setup today, I only had the waste gate tubing left. Yesterday I got the 2" flex so I could finish this up. Then I took everything apart and boxed it up so I can ship down to Jet-Hot tomorrow. I also started on my parachute mount as well. So far everything is going great on that and I will have no problem hiding it behind the license plate  I'll get some photos of that this weekend. I'm also going to build a nice billet aluminum mount that will fit around my steering column for two gauge cups that will house my fuel pressure and boost gauge. I want to put both of those right in front of my eyes with this new setup.

Corey nice to hear all you mentioned.Didn't realize you all had a DB. limit.

I think those classes are very nice for us,since we can hardly afford to build a 60,000 dollar, cert.chasis, per say, "Street Car".There are a few awfully fast cars here too and they hit the tires pretty hard,as well.

What's really wild is when the turbo guys try to put too much boost in too fast and end up in the other guys lane.It gits real exciting.

A couple of shots of the almost finished product. Car is in the chasis shop getting the cage conversion done. All I will have left is to wire up all the electrical goodies to the new ARC control panel then it's off to the dyno to tuning.
I drove the car a couple weekends ago in the falling snow to a buddies shop to finally put the headliner in it. It's so nice to have a turbo setup that allows you to cruise down the street just like it was a stock motor.

I''ve had every setup in this car, N/A, nitrous from a power shot to a big shot in a high compression setup, to a roots blower to a D1SC Procharger and now turbos.
Once you go turbo you will never go back to any of ther others. The driveability is amazing, it's quiet and will rip your head off if you so desire. About the only down side is working around all the extra crap, but it's still worth it :D

Hello,
I got married in 1983 and was in the military in Europe. Ha to get a "family" car and I could not stand the thought of a mini-van. A buddy advised me to test drive a Volvo Turbo wagon. I'll never forget the first time I felt the boost in a puny little 4 cylinder; first thought was "I'd love to have one of these on a big block." That was 25 years go and very few people were t'charging cars.

After building this 540, I have been wanting to do a turbo and EFI for the last 10 years, but money has been needed for other things. After reading this thread and seeing Corey's car.....I just have to do this sooner or later.

The driveablitiy issue and the huge power output are the best of both worlds. Your car looks like it has a hard charge on the top end. Does it feel like it ever wants to give up pulling?/ Also , what rpm do you shift and go through traps.

Great car and a neat project,

Bob

Barry,

I was admiring photos of your car in a post you had. It's going to be a very cool ride. You should check out our headsup site for some serious fun http://www.headsupnw.com/
Most of the time I'm at PIR, but I might make it down on some Friday evening tuning sessions at Woodburn this year. Either way, I will be at our Woodburn races and hopefully Pinks All Out.
I look forward to seeing your ride, I also have a soft spot for 66/7 Novas.

Bob,
Most of last year I shifted anywhere from 6000-6500, I played around with it a little bit. I had a very bad tranny and converter setup last year, so I blew through the converter (20%+ slippage), I was going through the big end at 6500 with a 3.50 gear. I should be around 7% this year with the new 9.5" PTC that I put in.
As for the video, the car actually kept falling off on the top end. For example, on my last pass I was 109.6 at the 1/8th and dropped off to 131. I ended up having fuel issues and was leaning out on the top end. Thats been resolved by going to a fuel cell with my winter build and adding a Weldon 2025 pump. If your looking to do your own setup, you should check out www.theturboforums.com you can find everything you need there.

Thanks, Neal

I built my own upper mount bracket that bolts directly to the head and acts as a spacer. The lower arm I ended up reshaping from the upper long sweeping arm you would normally see on a short water pump setup. The radius in the slot was perfect for this.

Here are a couple shots of the setup. I just run an alternator, the pump and fans are electric and I just switched over to a manual box.

I also found out that I will get the car back this Saturday from having the cage conversion done. If that goes well, I hope to have everything buttoned up this weekend and take it to the dyno next Friday. I plan on cruising the car over to the shop (about 10 miles away) and hopefully lay down 1050rwhp and cruise it home

Thanks,

Kevin,

The BFG's don't hook very well , at least they didn't with my twin setup leaving at zero pounds and I know there is no way they will hook with the new setup. I only ran the BFG's because it was the only decent size radial allowed in our drag radial class. For the most part I will be running a slick this year so I can enjoy the new glide/trans brake combo :hurray:

Things are on track for a dyno session this Friday, so I hope to have some video to go along with some numbers, it should be fun :beers:
