If you get near Albuquerque NM you need to go there. I just spent 2.5 hours there and just scratched the surface. When I get home I'll post some pics. The hair on the back of my neck was standing on end the whole time just seeing close up the cars I heard about on the radio or saw on the very small screen as a kid.
No ropes or chains you can step right up and look inside the cockpits and engines, crawl underneath if you want. It's divided into 5 sections, Pikes Peak, Dirt Track, Indy, Special Exhibit and Engineering. About 20 cars on display and lots of interactive stuff. One on the engineering has over 3 hours of video. Also cases of memobilia, news clippings, Indy rings, trophys, etc. There are volunteers to give you a brief overview and then to answer any questions. My favorites were the 60's SBC Pikes Peak Cars, Offy Dirt Track Racer and the Grantelli NOVI Indy car.
