I know the opening and especially the closing rates on these cams are especially quick. And as Harold stated as a rule of thumb, a 10% reduction equates to double the spring life. Well the Comp recommended 924 springs are toast after(actually probably before) about 900 miles and 48 1/4 mile passes. This was on the XE284 hyd flat BB grind. Time for a gentler kinder cam for the 439"! Tony A.

XE cams are said to be hard on the valve train. I have an XE262 in my 350 and it won't rev past 4300 rpm's. I think it has stock springs that are too weak. I need to change them soon. UDharold has a new Voodo lineup that is said to rival the XE series. I may go that route when I step up in cam size.

your springs should have held up even with that xe cam..hmmm...thats disturbing..

I have 4 years on my xe284. Countless 1/4 mile passes and the engine revs up to 6300+ very smoothly. It runs 12 seconds flat in the quarter and low elevens with 100 shot of nitrous. The springs that I use are old dual coil type.
I will say that the cam is not the quietest cam around. I do get plenty valve train noise, but I understand that noise is part of the xe line of cams. Performance is excellent, considering that I still use old camel back heads.

I have some generic Summit springs on my 350 with XE262. Over 10,000 street miles and over 100 drag passes to 5800rpm with no trouble whatsoever.

I ran a Comp XE 230/236 hydraulic roller. Comp recommended 986 springs for that cam. The springs only worked for a short time before I started getting valve float. I upgraded to the 987 springs and all was well.
I am now running a Comp XE 242/242 Solid roller and started out with the recommended 977 springs. They only lasted a short time as well.
I am now using Crower springs with great success. In my opinion, Comp is conservative on spring recommedations.

Ya, that's what I'm talking about. It's not the first time I've had problems with their springs going away in a short period either. I believe we'll make the switch to Crower as well! Thanks for the input.

I don't think it is a matter of conservative as it is the quality level. The Comp 924 fits a variety of applications, but for a big step up in durability with the same seat pressure, substitute the 925. The rate is higher at 395, but the 925 will hold up much better.
