: Anyone running an intercooler

72 GMC Sprint

I would like to install an intercooler on my 72 Sprint. I am running a procharger on a small block and wondering if anyone has any information on this topic. Thanks.

I don't have a ProCharger, but would LOVE to have one!!! From the reading/research I've done, intercoolers will definatly increase performance, lower the incoming air temps, and possible engine temps, allow you to use more boost, and more timing. I know ATI has an array of intercooler sizes and whatnot, give them a call, and I'm sure they'll hook you up with exactly what you need! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I have one on my Typhoon.
They will lower the intake air temp, and help with detonation.

Darin, I feel your pain. I too am trying to figure out a way to fit an intercooler on my car without totally butchering the grille / hood latch / radiator support and such. There is room to fit one in there but I have yet to decide upon a way that I can get one in there without hacking everything to bits. I have seen several Chevelles with front mount intercoolers and I have yet to see an installation that I was happy with cosmetically.

Unlike some of the other A-bodies (GTO's, Cutlasses, etc) which have a MILE of open space between the radiator support and the front grille which would allow you to front-mount an intercooler without even trying, our poor Chevelles don't have that luxury. That makes it really hard to fit an intercooler in without hacking all sorts of stuff up.

It would be possible to run a horizontal mount (parallel to the ground) intercooler in front of the sway bar and hang a scoop on it (ATI sets up some of their intercooled 5.0 'Stang kits with a setup just like that) and while you could easily do it, I think it would hang too low.

Until I figure out how a way to install an intercooler and have it cosmetically acceptable I'm satisfied running water injection and no intercooler-- it already makes way more power than I can use on the street.

Here's a pic of a 70-72 Chevelle with an intercooler... can you spot the radiator however?

However the picture I posted above isn't mine. I can't remember where that picture was taken, but I saved it because it was one of the only "clean" intercooler installs I have ever seen on a Chevelle and I wanted to keep it for reference.

On the other hand, this is my current setup, just finished and back on the road as of this week after being down a year:

Do you want air/air intercooler?

I think an water/air is better use a high flowing water pump. A little extra radiator in your front. Then start flow water after your burnout. Ice can be used for extra performance.

Otherwise N20 is sweet in these non-intercooler situations. Or methanol/water injection.

Or just go with bigger jets, fine tune for E85, then you can put out alot more boost timing and run higher compression for more low end torque.
