Currently refinishing the two "Dark Blue" metal kick panel speaker grilles on my 1969 Chevelle. They are in real good shape just some surface rust. My biggest question is how to match the paint color? and second is really just reaching out to see if anyone has done this before. Their are alot of tiny holes in the grilles and it would appear difficult not to fill a few with paint. Thanks and Happy New Year!!!

Bead blast the grilles, give them a light coat of primer then lightly coat with paint. Some holes may fill in, but pop them with a tooth pick and you'll be fine. Light coats of paint should avoid that problem though. You don't want the grilles to have a full gloss and light coats of paint will help achieve that. If not, hit them with a satin clear when dry.

I've just taken the grilles with the original color to the auto store and found a close match on the touch up paint.

Good luck.

Woj.

I've spent much time attempting to match the color. Very Expensive. I went to Pep Boys and found a real good Dupli-Color Match that actually is a GM Color. Next will be SEM ing the kick panels. that will be the next color match problem.

SEM has a program where you can custom match your interior color. Just bring in a sample to your auto body/paint supply store and they can help.

Jim is correct . Take the part and dupli-color to a auto paint store . They can actually add a vinyl additive to a regular paint color. I have used both a Morton additive in semi gloss lacquer and spayed all my black stuff with a lite coat to freshed it up. also used the dupont version. Make sure to clean it many times to get all the armor all off. Gary

Just figured I show off the finished speaker grilles. 1st they were bead blasted (thanks Leo) then straighted out with a putty knife. Next came metal etching primer (thanks Jeff) and finally a call to Tower Paint in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Very nice people and they matched the 1969 interior paint code #765 very nicely. They were a plessure to deal with. No small holes were filled in and I'm very happy with the results.
