i have a new set of ssm bars on my 69. i'm going to borrow a magnetic base angle finder from a friend and i would like to know some of the step by step procedures i need to do to set the pinion angle.

thanks in advance chris

Chris,
Unless you have adjustable uppers, what you see is what you get!

when i read the instructions it says you have to adjust the pinion angle with the lift bars. i didn't think that they are preset, if so why does it say to set it from 2-5 dergrees?

They are not preset. You set the angle when you drill the bolt hole. Be sure you are on level ground then clamp the plates with vise-grips when you have to angle you want. If you get it right, you can save a bunch of money since adjustable uppers are not needed. If you get it wrong, you'll need to spend for the uppers. IIRC, I set mine at 4.5º. Changing pinion angle isn't needed once it is right.

on the angle does it only pertain to the driveshaft/rear end or does it include the trans too? i knew about the final two bolts but how do you measure and where? any help please.

thanks chris

Measure your driveline angle which is measured on your harmonic balancer, block, oil pan bolts or transmission pan bolts. Then Measure your pinion angle on the u-joint cap with the joint facing directly down. use a small socket that rests cleanly on the cap and rest the protractor on the socket.

Take a look at the pic. IGNORE THE BOTTOM DIAGRAM, It is from another Post for someonew elses car.

is the -3 reading on the trans in relationship to the driveshaft? if so i just have to do the same on the pinion and add them together for the final angle. well if this is right i just might have it. if not please correct me.

thanks alot.

Yes,

The angle on the transmission bolts and harmonic balancer (DRIVELINE Angle) often is the same as the Driveshaft angle as measured on the driveshaft.

-3 down on the driveshaft and -1 down on the pinion will make a very shallow letter "V" for a total of -3 + -1 = -4.
